Now that I have the MH Disc Extreme

What suggestions do you have for a :

[ol][*]Replacement ramrod[*]Do I go with the FPJ for the primers or not ? 2 breech plugs + an adapter came with the gun[*]Recommendations on SAbot/Bullet Combos[*]Starting loads[/ol]

Any information received will be greatly appreciated.

Did two breech plugs and an adaptor came with the rifle? I only got the one breech plug and twenty of the primer jackets with some bullets. Of course there was the breech plug wrench and allen wrench.

Replacement ramrod.. I might go with a Super Rod from Cains Outdoors. I have one on another rifle and it is a very good ramrod. It seems very strong and well made.

recommendations of bulletes and sabots.. is a good question. Knight would tell you 250 or 300 grain Knight RED Hot sabots, and 100-120 grains of loose or 100-150 in pellets.

starting loads.. anyone's guess right now.

Simple for Replacement Ramrod, XS Power Rod, Knight sells them:

http://www.knightrifles.com/ProductDetail.aspx?id=900746

or the RMC Rugged Ram Rod:

http://rmcsports.com/rmcsports_cfmfiles/product.cfm?msection=1044

Most Knights shoot the Barnes bullets marketed by Knight, the Ultimate Slam or the Knight version of the Barnes MZ called the Red Hot, see
http://www.knightrifles.com/catalog.aspx?catID=BulletsSabots.

These are excellent bullets. I would read the manual and see what Knight recommends you shoot these bullets at, usually 2 777 or pyrodex pellets. I am sorry I don't know what FPJ means for primers, Federal?
Best Wishes with your new rifle. Your on an adventure. Chap Gleason

Yes I received 2 breech plugs one with a long stem and an adapter that fits in the bolt face. I also received allen wrench and a bore jag as well as the breech plug wrench and 10 solid lead bullets and sabots.

When I said FPJ I meant that red plastic jacket that Knight advertises. Thanks

Oh, I see. Yes, my son hasa Knight rifle and uses the red plastic jacket, the primersare hard to get in and you will need a tool to do it, a pair of plyers works. Another friend of mine reuses the red jacket, and punches the primers out with a nail punch. Any primer will work, I like Federal and Winchester or CCI. You don't need to buy the expensive 777 and Kleen bore primers, any will work.

Should I use the KNIGHT plastic primer holder or use the adapter ...I know one is probably more watertight .

RE: Now that I have the MH Disc Extreme

use the FPJ, the conversion isn't that great of a setup. your not supposed to reuse the jackets after firing. i use the knight tool to load jackets but you don't need it. just lay the primer upside down on a table and push the jacket over it.
the barnes bulets tend to shoot the best as the other posts have stated.
i like the extenion rod that came with my master hunter, don't recall what model rod it is.

I would agree if your in very wet conditions all the time, that is a wise practice. However, if your on a limited budgetor like to save a buck then reusing the jackets is wise. What is the issue if it works? Think Knight might saythat to make more money? The price on the newred jackets are about double the origonal discs. They should be about the same cost as the orange discs.

I am kind of curious after reading this post as to what actually came with the rifle as accessories...

I received;

one breech plug
one loading jag
20 red primer adaptors
six bullet/sabot combinations
DVD
instruction manual
allen wrench
breech plug wrench
four scope screw fillers

does that sound right. I was kind of surprised today when I got the sabots and bullets out.. I thought.. cheap buggers, six bullets is all? I think I got someone's return rifle....

well it sounds like they somehow missed the second breech plug and adaptor in my box. Other then that I have the rest of it. Those bullets that came with it shot pretty good today. I wonder what they are?

I think old elk hunter bought his rifle from a different store at a different price. This may explain why he has the non full plastic jacket adaptor and breech plug in his package and you don't Dave. I got exactly the same accessories you got.

Ok, well that might explain it. I think next time out I will test some Buffalo Bullets and some Nosler. These red plastic primer holders have been reloaded three times now and show no sign of wear. It will be interesting to see how many shots I get off one. I did buy a new box of the primer jackets too...

Is yours the fluted MHC barrel? if so what serial number... I am somewhat concerned because mine is a 4 diget number #14?? - seems this late in the game they would be far beyond that...

Just a thought

Oh, that long stem breech plug is the new Power Plug or something like that that doesn't leave a crud ring and allows mag loads to be burned quicker more efficiently. Toby Bridges said this about the Knight Power Stem here: http://www.hpmuzzleloading.com/Technical3.html

Now, here's a bit of good news for you Knight .50 caliber DISC Extreme owners. Purchase and install one of the "Power Stem" breech plugs that Knight developed for getting full consumption of 150-grain charges of loose-grain Triple Seven in their .52 DISC Extreme rifle...and you can pretty much eliminate the Triple Seven crusty ring altogether with any of the No. 209 primers. In a .50 caliber bore, the tip of the 1 1/2" long stem sits at about the 70 grain level of a 100- or 110-grain charge of FFFg Triple Seven. And by igniting the powder charge that far forward must do something to the burning characteristics of the powder. And while I did wipe the bore between shots, I could not feel any indication of the ring when shooting with the stemmed

So you have a regular breech plug and a power stem.

RE: Now that I have the MH Disc Extreme

I shot 110 grains of Triple Se7en 2f with the standard Extreme plug today and found no trace of a crud ring at all. In fact I kept using the same swab patch over and over for about three swabs before I changed to a new one. So far it is a nice rifle to load and shoot.

Oh, that long stem breech plug

No it is not that if I screw it in and put the adapter into the bolt face I can fit a 209 in the end ..the combustion end of it looks just like the conventional FPJ breech plug. I know what your talking about and I may try that at a later point. Thanksw

RE: Now that I have the MH Disc Extreme

Wow that is really good, 3 swipes with the same patch, I've never done that with any rifle with 777.
That is great. Chap

I think that what you have is a breech plug adapter for a #11 cap. My Knight Disc came with an Orangedisc that held a #11 cap. So my guess is Knight still puts them in with all their guns since some states only allow FlintLock and percussion cap ignition, not 209 ignition. Chap

RE: Now that I have the MH Disc Extreme

If I am not badly mistaken he has the non full plastic jacket adapter. This allows shooting 209 primers without the red jackets.

cayugad 03-09-2008 07:44 PM

RE: Now that I have the MH Disc Extreme

Personally I kind of like these red primer jackets.. they are easy to load and unload, and easy to carry. I take out a small bag of 20 and when I am done, drive out the old primer using a bolt and a large nut to rest the jacket on. Then reload them and am all set for the next shoot.

I agree, especially while hunting with cold fingers.
