Are you SURE it is a T/C Hawken????

I'd bet my custom flintlock that they are rated for more than 70grs of Goex...

Like Cay said, a round ball will kill very well...I started with a .45 flintlock back in the mid 70s, made a .54 in the late 80s and have probably taken 50 deer with the two combined, out to 125 yards...

I shot 75grs on the .45 and 80grs in the .54...Anywhere from 75-100grs is plenty for deer with a ball...

Lemoyne the book I got with my .50 hawken say the max load is 70 gr. of pyrodex RS with a rb. Can I safely shoot more than the recommended max load?

Thanks,

Die Hard
A lot of times they will suggest 70 grains of Pyrodex RS and a patched roundball as being perhaps the most accurate and best hunting load. BUT most rifles will handle 100 grains or more. STILL I do not recommend going over what the manufacturer says is the max load. In my T/C manual it lists 110 grains of FFG as the max load. In my Lyman manual they list 110 grains as the max load for a .50 caliber. The Investarms manual lists 70 grains as the recommended load. I got the Investarms manual and the Lyman manual with the same rifle.. so you can judge for yourself. CVA & Traditions list 100 grains as a max load with a roundball.

So I personally think you would be safe shooting more then 70 grains.

diehardhunter,I think you should double check that, I have never seen one with a 70 gr max. How ever if that is correct I do not recommend going over it, if its that low the manufacture had a reason for making it that low. The ones I built I proof tested myself, the other ones I have[ TC ]all have a max of 120 gr of Black FFor Pyrodex RS.

I have a T/C Hawken that I built from a kit in the late 70's , Belive it or not it will shoot a round ball or maxi-ball thru the same hole using Goex FFF and a CCI #11 magnum primer, I don't know what the twist is but it is the original T/C barrel.....

My T/C book says 120 FFF black or pyro . I've never shot over a 4" group with mine and have shot loads from 50 to 110 . By the book with 110 grs a tight patched .490 is leaving the muzzle at a little over 2200fps which is about the same as a 30-06' with a 180 . I have punched both heads on an 55 gal oil drum at 175yrd the drop was about 14" and the exit hole was about the size of a half dollar .

I think if you double check you'll find that it says FF, not FFF
