Great Plains Breech Dimensions
Here's some general info some of you may be interested in.
I sent the following e-mail to Lyman yesterday. I'm the proud owner of a new Lyman GP .54 flintlock. Shot it for the first time last week-end. Love it! Do you have a schematic avaliable that will help me understand the breech? I can tell there is a chamber that is less than barrel diameter. I'd like to know the diameter and depth of this chamber, and whether it is round or flat bottomed. Hello,Thank you for buying a Lyman Rifle. We hope you have lots of time to enjoy it. As you know the breechplugs are not removable from our rifles. They are made together with the barrel.. The specs of them are.1" deep35 caliber widthround bottom.Lyman customer service |

That's good information to know. If I remember correctly I think it mentions the 35cal brush for cleaning in the flash channel of the BP somewhere in the manual, I'll have to look it up when I get a chance. Thanks for the info.

Found the manual online and there it was on page 13.
"Cleaning Note Note: The powder channel inside the breech plug is smaller than the bore diameter and does not allow the cleaning jag to enter. Lyman recommends the use of a .35 cal. cleaning brush and/or a slotted tip cleaning rod to reach into this area." It doesn't mention the round bottom though so that is bonus info. |
RE: Great Plains Breech Dimensions
Its alot easier to flush the chamber with hot water and soap than to use a brush. It'll be cleaner too. When you oil the bore, some oil will seep down into that chamber and keep it from rusting. I personally remove the touch hole liner every time I clean and use a flush tube, then wipe/oil with q tips. If you'll wrap your liner with teflon tape it'll unscrew with very little resistance.

I use a 38 cal bore brush than put a cleaning patch on it after flushing, it gets out water and hidden crud I than swab with essox oil.
