It looks like a Tradition's Kentucky Model rifles. They are good shooters from what I heard. Keep us posted. Are you going to make him put it together or is this going to be a group project? By the way, great picture of your kids there... :D

Those are excellent shooters! I have the .50cal flintlock. Mine likes 110 grains FFFg goex, .018 pillow ticking and a roundball.

we got a chance to take the rifle parts out of the box the other day, and from what i see its going to be a real headache. nothing lines up, the forearm and the stock are misslined by at least 1/8 inch, the butt plate cut is bad off, the hammer won't line up with the nipple, ramrod is warped, but other than that it sure looks like its going to be real fun to make work. haley has named it the "TERMINATOR".

RE: kit gun

either take it back to bass pro or call traditions and tell them about it. They more than likely will send you a new kit. Dont do any work to it!

RE: kit gun

i have therifle almost done, it just took some grinding and filing. they are sending me a different ramrod but i have a problem with the sights. the dovetail cuts on the barrel are a little big or the sights themself are to small, they just slide right through if you hold it to the side. anyone have a fix for this. i thought about drilling a small hole through the sight plateand tapping it that way i could put a set screw in it, but thats going to be big job on such a little parts. is there any kind of glue or cement bond i could use. give me some more id's if you have any.

RE: kit gun

would it be possible to shim that rear sight? Perhaps some pop can shims... the trouble is, would you ever trust it. I wonder if a different dovetail sight would work in there?

RE: kit gun

both front and back are loose, but not enough for shims, they both(front and rear)just slide right through. someone else told me to tap the lip of each slot to tighten them . i am going to look through my junk box and see if i can match up a set that might work before i do anything.

Peen the barrel. Just use a small chisel and lightly put a few dings into the dove tail on the barrel. I wish i could get you better help with pictures but i am in new mexico at my sisters for the night. Having to peen the barrel is common on a lot of kit rifles.

Front Gander is right just tap the dovetail with a hammer and punch lightly this will tighten up the dovetail and the sight will hold. Do both faces of the dove tale slot

RE: kit gun

TAKE A CENTER PUNCH AND DIMPLE THE DOVE SLOT THIS WILL RAISE THE METAL FOR A BETTER SIGHT FIT
OR SOME ALUMINUM OR BRASS SHIMS WILL WORK

RE: kit gun almost done

all i need to do now is work on the sights some more. i punched the rear slot with about six punches but its still to loose to grip the sight without it just sliding out.
