RE: my first range session with my new englander
My NewEnglander likes short conicals like the Lee 250 or 325 grain REALs with 80 grains T-7 ffg.
Haven't tried T-7 & PRB in it, but it seems to favor heavy charges of BP with a PRB. (90 - 100 gr ffg Goex) PRB accuracy is acceptable, but not great out of it. I always used a 325 grain Lee REAL for my #1 hunting load, but bought a 250 grain mould this winter and my only range session with them in my newEnglander looks like they may soon replace the 325 grain. It will take a couple groups with each one on the same day to determine which is most accurate, but they will both shoot very well. Oddly enough another very accurate projectile in mineis a 350 grain cast .458 bullet in an MMP orange sabot. |
RE: my first range session with my new englander
I been thinking about this.
powder: maybe shooter: I have taken the blame meany of times barrel: it was pitted sights: could the blade being loose give me some problems? no scope: got use to scopes now have to get use to open sights again next time out, I am going to just shoot one projectile and work on it. I am going to use pyrodex rs. see if I can get groups.. |
RE: my first range session with my new englander
Well try the Pyrodex RS powder. Load 80 grains of it. And if possible go to the thicker patch. With the .010 patch you might be getting too much blow by. I would go with at least a .015 patch. A patched roundball is not supposed to be a real easy load you know. You short seat it, then you long seat it and finally drive that down the barrel onto the powder. Also start your shooting at 25 yards. That rifle should shoot real good. You might even have to push that rifle more then 80 grains. Time will tell. If you have some wad, try putting one between the powder and patch. With the pitted barrel it might help a lot.

I am trying to get out next saturday, and give another chance, I will also pick up some wads and .015 patchs as well, maybe change the sights on it as well.
