XTP
Looking through my "stuff" I found a box of 200gr .400 XTP's Must have had them quite a while. Has anyone used them on deer? What is the speed range for best performance? I might just shoot targets with them.

Some guysi hunt with swear by those bullets. Good sectional density and very effective on deer and hogs. Just bought some myself and am waiting for a warm day to try them in my Encore. EDITED: I was wrong. Just talked to one of them on the phone. They use the .400Shockwave bullets, that is what i bought. |
RE: XTP
Go to the modernmuzzleloader.com Forum and look under muzzy success threds and look under XTP comes unglued I have never seen so much damage from any buulet in my life , These are what I am going to shoot in my .45cal Knight Disc Extreme FOR SURE.

RE: XTP
According to my calculator table that bullet was just over 2000 fps. I know that is beyond what Hornady designed it for. BUT-you have a very dead deer.

RE: XTP
I have shot targets with them.. they are very accurate. Actually a fun bullet to shoot. I was shooting science projects one day. That old fruits and vegetables that the refrigerator hid on me and then tried to change their molecular density. I set oranges and some old apples and a red cabbage out at the target and shot them with the 200 grain XTP. It just makes those things explode. What they would do in a deer I have no idea.

RE: XTP
Chasam60,I have used both the 50/40 200gr XTP and the 50/40 200gr SW to take deer and boar and I am impressed by the flatness of trajectory and their effectiveness on game. The bc of the SW is.269 and the SD is 179 I consider this very good for a muzzle loading bullet. I use 150 gr RSin the Omega [because thats what groups best in it] and get a trajectory of +3" @ 100yds and -4"@ 200yds I use 110of 777 in the Triumph and it has about 6 " drop @ 200yds. These bullets have been one of the easiest to get to shoot good in all my inlines. I still like the 250 Gold Dot to get bang flops at short distance in thick brush. Lee

RE: XTP
The .400 cal 200 grain XTP is a great bullet for deer. I've taken 2 deer in 2 years with them- both boom-flops. Both shots were around 100 yards. As far as velocities go, I think that you would get the best performance with 80 - 110 grains 777 or equivalent. I'm not sure if I would use 150 grain magnum charge with this bullet - they can fragment some or get jacket separation at extreme velocities. I'm not a speed freak, so I use 80 grains 777 in a .45 cal. I'm not saying they are the absolute best bullet out there (I'd love to play around with some other rounds too), but I have about 35 bullets left of a 100 round box, and I'm happy enough to stick with the XTP's til I run out.

Chasam60
I have shot a lot of the 10mm 200 grain XTP's - they are accurate and the are fast... We are unable to hunt with them in the State of Idaho, we have a minimum requirement of .428 for big game, but I have used them on ground squirrels in the spring - GOSH! |
RE: XTP
I have never shot a 150 gr load.I worked up to 120 in the Omega but saw no difference other than more recoil. I shoot 110 with a 250 SST and 100 with a 260 Nosler partition. I do not think I will shoot anymore deer with the SST. I have killed 4 but only one was DRT. Two were found dead over 100-150 yds away. One required a 2nd shot she was down and could not get up,but would not die. The Noslers plant them fast. I shot quite a few with a 240/44 XTP from my Rem 700 none went more than 30 yds most did not go 10. Thanks to all for the info.

RE: XTP
I sent an email to Hornady on 1/22,just got a reply- 2375fps is what they said. That is HOT

RE: XTP
I recently shot a Javelina with one of those. The results are in an earlier post with some graphic pics.
I was surprised at the expansion (almost excessive) and weight loss at a fairly moderate velocity. Damage was extensive, but I'm a bit leary of driving these handgun bullets at high velocities. http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2646218 |
RE: XTP
Also, just to experiment, I tried these out in three of my .45 sidelock pistols on tuesday (used blue Harvester sabots).
Got bad key-holing with two of the pistols at 25 yds. One, an old "Ultra-High" Kentucky-style pistol, made in Japan, shot them pretty well. Seems that they won't always stabilize in a short barrel. Of the three pistols, the Ultra-High had the loosest fit and shot them the best. |

That is HOT. I'm very surprised that they claim the 200 grainer is rated that fast. (I assume you're still talking about the 10mm 200 grain XTP)This year I shot a doe with the XTP - hit at about 1900 fpsimpact velocity (this is an estimate). The bullet penetrated diagonallythrough the chest cavity, and I found it lodged under thefar side hide. When I field dressed the deerI found that the jacket had separated from the bullet - the lead core held together pretty well, although it lostsome weight. Internal damage was extensive, toput it mildly. So I can only imagine what might happen at 2375 fps. My guess is you are going to getjacket separation, quick, massive expansion, probably somefragmentation. Couldbe a great load for coyotes, though.Personally, I'd dial it down to 2000fps max for shooting at deer. |

RE: XTP
Yea-that is the 10mm/200 I'm refering to. I did not tell them I was using a 50 cal so the reply was "depends on the sabot you are using, you can use the tan sabot, and make sure your rifle can safely handle 150 grs of powder" I am pretty the tan sabot is for a 45 cal. Idont think the velocity would change in a 50 cal with blue sabot. I was thinking more like 1950/2000 max in my Omega.
