50 cal hawken loads
I am just finishing up my hawken kit and need to start thinking about bullets and powder for it. Can you guys share some of your loads with me so I have some differant things to try. Also would you recommend pyrodex RS or goex powder?
Thanks, Die Hard |

I do not have any Hawkens any longer i have switched over to Renegades. In the 50 1/48 I shoot 80 grains T3f - topped with a .125x.510 shot card - then a .503 460 grain Bull Shop Conical. I use Dynimit Noble 1075+ # 11 caps to set the whole works off. I was using T7-2f but it has to large of grains to get our under the nipple. The 3f drops out real well for good ignition even in really cold weather. Dan is also now making 445 grain UC short conical which would also be a good choice for deer. These are slip fit conicals - you order them to fit your bore - no short starter needed just out them in push them down with you thumb - put them home with the ram-rod. ![]() |
RE: 50 cal hawken loads
In my 1-48 twist .50 caliber rifles they shoot roundball with 90 grains of powder and a patched .490 ball. With the conicals and REALs I shoot 80 grains of powder. All you can do is play with the different loads and see what happens.

RE: 50 cal hawken loads
Roundballs with a buttered .105-018 cotton patch pushed by around 70-80 grains is a good starting point.
You can also do a google.com search for 240 grain PA Conicals by Hornady. Try around 70-80 grains with those. If you cannot find them, go to Hornady.com. Many bullet reloading aisles in gun stores carry them in the Hornady bullet section. |
RE: 50 cal hawken loads
www.possibleshop.com has the PA conicals.
