Any anbody tried a 35cal (.358) in a .45 muzzloader?
 

Any anbody tried a 35cal (.358) in a .45 muzzloader? Like a sierra game king 200 or 225 gr bullet with a sabot like this?

i haven't tried the 200gr but i do use the .357 38cal. 140gr xtp in the blue sabot. they work but you can't pust them to fast or they loose their balance and will tear the sabot up.

No but I have given it a lot of thought. Problem I ran into was finding the right sabot. The sabots I had must have been for 9mm or smaller bullet, when I insert a .358 in it would buldge out the sides so much that it was imposible to fit it down the barrel. If you can get it to work it should be a good combination, it would have a better BC than any of the 45 cal jacketed spitzer bullets common now.

I have not actually tried it, but I would guess that they may be too long for caliber to sabilize in twists common for MLers, like 1-28". Maybe the 200 but I doubt the 225gr would stabilize.

In a few years when the cash is on hand, I'd like to get a centerfire twist 45cal barrel put on a Rem700 short action and have a breechplug machined for it to shoot off shortened 6mm cases or something....then I'd shoot the highest BC .35cal bullets I could find in those sabots and see what they could do with smokeless, just for fun.

if you use to much powder the sabot will come apart. it will be all chewed up. i got a 45cal knight super disc and if you use the blue sabot and a big charge you get bad results(chewed or shreded sabot and you can't tell where the bullet will hit. i have used them in a cva long rifle with a 70gr charge and they work good.

I wonder if the ballistic tip Nosler AccuBond Bullets 35 Caliber (358 Diameter) 225 Grain Spitzer Boat Tails would work. I would think with the boat tail it would actually not bulge the sabot and go in the barrel. Would be great if it did and actually was stable. Don't want to buy a whole box to find out.

spaniel, just a stray thought but why not 45 colt or .454 they would be bore size .

I've shot some from my 45cal Disc Elite. You need the PRBullet 45/357 orange sabots. They are the ONLY ones tuff enough to be pushed hard and not fail. MMP makes the sabot for PRbullet, but we can not purchase them direct from MMP, cause of the agreement for the PRbullet rights to the name/style.

You are correct, in that the shorter the 358 bullet the better it stabalizes. The 180-200 grainers work the best. you still need to know what the operational velocity range is--what speed will they expand and perform best. These are my favorites so far:

I do have some more testing to do.I have a Lee bullet sizer, with dies .354, .355, .356, and .357. So far I have only pushed all lead bullets thru them. And have custimized many cast bullets to fit perfectly in sabot to barrel;) My barrel likes the bullet sized to .355-356 with PRbullet sabotthe Best!

Wondering if I can push the jacketed bullets thru them with out damaging my sizer/dies??Cause the 358 load very hard[&:],but perform well.


Saying all that, I still prefer the 45/40cal 200grain Shockwave/SST:D Loads WAY easier and shoots like a Laser Beam:)


I will get some more of the Hornady 180g 358's and run some thru the sizer(Well Lubed) and see If I can get them to load/shoot better.

That what I was woundering -Thanks - I am looking at getting a 45. I shoot the 175 .357 Duplex dead center now and thought about playing with a .45
