RE: Cabin and thieves

My group hunts deer in Southern Iowa, about a two hour drive from where we live. Up here in central Iowa lives a state park officer who owns a cabin near where we hunt. One of my hunting pards has a little brother who had classes with the officer.

We have been using the cabin for the first Iowa shotgun season for about six years now. The officer worries about it during the season but has to work a state park hunt and cannot watch it himself.

It is a sweet deal for us, a free cabin, and no fees to hunt on my cousin's land. In a very real way the criminals have helped our group have a place to hunt. Without the cabin, bad weather this year would have made hunting a misery.

The picture shows how we spent most of opening day drying out.

Nice place! Are any of the guns loaded that are sitting next to the wood burning stove?

I blame much of the problems with today's young people on the lawyers and "do gooders". When I was a kid I could expect to be corrected for misbehavior by any adult in the vicinity - family member, neighbor, stranger - didn't matter.Try that today and you'll have a lawsuit on your hands faster than you can say "social worker".

I really feel lucky. We had a travel trailer on our UP property for years. Some one took the eagale leveler bubbles off it after about 6 years of being there. One year I was there alone working on a new fuse holder from the battery to the inside converter. Had this old fellow come walking up and say excuse me. Scared the bejabbers out of me. He asked permission to hunt one spot on my property even though I never did hunt that area. Any way he used to go check the place out for us, caught a couple of his nephews as they were going to break a window and go in (we never leave any thing there except the cooking and eating stuff). He peeled their hide for them and their dad did too when Lou told him what they had been doing. Lou brought them down and had them apoiliges to me for what they were going to do.
Lou died Nov 24th 2007 at 81 years old. I know I am going to miss him.
I think for us the key is we never leave any thing nor do we place blinds or curtens over the windows. Our cabin issix and a half hours from home

I leave a Kawasaki Mule ( Someone please steal it) a diesel 6000 watt gen and a tractor with several attachments at this cabin year round. I do have a huge chain on the gen. There are tons of tools, chainsaws and all of the normal things you need to survive in the cabin. As I mentioned before the doors have never been locked. This is just the case of 2 outlaw boys who have overpowered their grandparents. Both of them are in their late 70's. The little community doesn't have a lawman because they usually fix the problems themselves. I still believe 99.99999% of the people are honest and this little problem has not changed my mind.

Here is my little piece of heaven on earth. Told the family to just scatter my remains among the mighty white oaks.
