385 grain Great Plains Conicals

Just bought two boxes last night at Dick's Sporting Goods. They were on clearance from $8 and some change to $4.97. I am going totry thesein my T/C New Englander along with several other bullets this Spring. Any good starting loads and personal experience with these bullets?

I have a buddy that uses them in his NEF. He shoots them with 80 gr. of 777 with good results on deer. He busted a nice little 6 point last season at 110 paces with that load. Made a nice hole on the way out of that critter.

I have shot them out of a traditions tracker 209 and out of my knights and they shot great out of both guns with 80 - 85gr loose 2fg 777 1.25" at 100yds. have taken several deer with them in past years , But the only way to make sure your gun is going to like them is try them for sure. I would start with 70 - 75gr of powder and work up from there. Also that is a super great price on them Better get some more at that price. they run $12.99 to 14.99 around here if you can find them.

I have had great success with the Hornady Great Plains 385gr conical with a wide variety of ML's and loads. One of my favorite projectiles. Very effective.
More times than not, I have better success when using a wad even though these are not a flat base conical.

Regarding loads, don't push them too fast otherwise you will "strip" the rifling and thus lead the bore and loose accuracy.

Excellent price!

With the T/C New Englander & a 385gr GP, depends on powder. Here are a few:
Hodgdon 777 2FG = Start out around 70gr. (My petload is 90gr)
Black Mag'3 = Start out at 70gr (My pet load is 85gr)
Swiss 3FG = Start out at 60gr (My pet load is 70gr)
Swiss 2FG = Start out at 80gr (my pet load is 105gr)
Goex 2FG = Start at 75gr (my pet load is 90gr)

My New Englander loves them with 90 grains Pyrodex RS. I would buy every box they have at that price - what a deal.

My X-150 loved them under 80 grains Pyrodex P. Also liked the 410 grain flatnose. That was the best shooting conical in that rifle along with a wide assortment of other conicals.

That's an excellent price. When you see deals like that you have to jump on them. You save nothing but money if you love to shoot...

They should work real well. I never pushed them too hard in my Renegades.. usually 80 grains of Pyrodex Rs and the accuracy was exceptional. The one thing I will say. They are game takers. They are accurate, they make a nice entrance hole and usually a better exit hole.

Good luck with them.
