XTP Users
I shoot 300gr/45s out of a knight Disc 22" bbl. I'm using 110gr of t7 fff. My son shot 2 deer with this load this year and one went about 75yds and the other droped in his tracks.(through the shoulders). 2 shots and 2 deer but do you think I am pushing the xtps to fast. Where we hunt ( U.P. of Mich ) all of our hunting is done when there is snow on the ground so tracking is not a factor. What are youre guys thoughts on this, should I lower my charge or keep it the way it is. Shoots 1 1/2" groups at 100 yds with this load. Also I should say that our shots are from 60 to 100 yds. Thanks Kerry

RE: XTP Users
If the load is accurate and is working.. why fix it. Some people shoot them with as little as 85 grains of powder and are still getting pass through and excellent expansion. Since you have a lot more in the field experience with them then I do.. I sure am not going to tell you different. Congratulations on the deer..

RE: XTP Users
If it ain't broke don't fix it I always say. I shoot the same bullet w/85 and 100g out of two different guns and get the exact same results. I simply choose those amounts because they are most accurate.

RE: XTP Users
Tenmilephenom, The 300gr XTP is one of the best it will handle any normal muzzleloader velocity out of that 22 inch barrel. In this case it is not broke so trying to fix it will not go in the right direction. the experiments I did with them show best results from 1750 to 1950 FPS you should be right in the sweet spot.Lee

RE: XTP Users
I shoot the same bullet with 90gr T7 ff. About 1600 fps. No problems here.

RE: XTP Users
You have a very good load there, no need to change anything.
|
RE: XTP Users
Congrats on the deer! I wouldn't change anything- sounds like a perfect load for your situation. If you were shooting the 240 grain XTP, there might be more of a question about pushing it too fast, but the 300 grainer is definately going to hold together at the velocities you're sending it at. Ditto what everyone else is saying - ain't broke, don't fix it.

RE: XTP Users
I wouldn't change it...your short barrel lowers the velocity a lot anyways, so if it works, keep using it.

Tenmilephenom
My only question would be does your 22" barrel burn the full 110 grains or are you shooting some of it out the end of the barrel? My first thought is that you might be shooting some un-burnt powder out the end and on to the ground. What are you using for an ignition source... caps or 209's? |
RE: XTP Users
sabotloader , I'm using reg win 209s.

Tenmilephenom
I'm using reg win 209s If you had a chrono you could clock you load then start backing down in 10 grain increments and if the velocity dropped you would know you are getting the most out of your powder but if stays the same you are getting a good burn. Another way as some of the old timers tell me you could shoot it across snow and if it is spitting out unburnt powder you would see it in the snow in front of you... But the real result of this is if it is working why fool with it... powder is not that expensive - results are.. |
RE: XTP Users
Yeah - you are pushing it. 90 grains 777 FFFis more than enough out-to 150 yards. The 300 XTP was built for magnum-like pistol speeds. Like the Powerbelts, they prefer sub-100 grains.

RE: XTP Users
I used a 300gr XTP and 100gr Pyrodex R/S to drop a deer in it's tracks this year. My rifle shoots to approximatelythe same POI @ 100 yards with 100gr Pyrodex or 80gr T-7. Just happened to be using Pyrodex that day since it was pouring rain and I didn't know how moisture might affect the T-7. [&:]
I guessed the shot to be about 80 yards, but it was actually closer to 100. Quartering-towards me and I put the bullet in front of the shoulder. No exit & a dead deer dropped on the spot! Unfortunately it was pouring rain, I had my 7 year old with me, it was getting dark, and the creeks were rising fast (and we had to cross one), so I field dressed it as quickly as possible and got it out of there! No time for an autopsy, but I could tellthe lungs were destroyed! |
