Fitting Green Mountain Barrel

Has any one fit a Green Mountain drop in barrel to a Lyman rifle. I understand that there maybe some fitting involved withe the tang and under rib. I would appreciate any info as I am expecting my GM barrel any day now and will ve fitting it to my Deer Stalker flint

RE: Fitting Green Mountain Barrel

When I tried to fit the new carbine barrel from Green Mountain to my Lyman Trade rifle (since their chart says it is going to fit) I noticed that the hook on the breech needs to be thinned. NOT A LOT MIND YOU. I could almost get the barrel hookinto the tang. I think a few strokes with a good file would have done the trick. Like a stroke on each side. As for the thimble rib that does have to be reduced. Depending on the rifle you are going to put the barrel on. I measured mine out for the T/C Hawkins, took a Dremel tool with a metal cutting disc and very carefully cut the thimble rib off. Then I have a blueing pen from Birchwood Casey for touch ups and just touched that up. It then fit like a dream.

Thanks again Dave I thought that you had done this. I have a smooth bore 54 comming I will mostly use it for a shotgun.

28 gauge.. should make a nice little squirrel and bunny gun. Although the snowshoe rabbits disappeared this year. A few cottentail are out. I took a couple of them last week. That .56 should do real nice on them.

I have a 1-28 twist 21" for the Carbine barrel. I hope to shoot it tomorrow.

Got My 54 smoothbore fited filed tang down, rib fit perfect, goes in barrel channel easier than my lyman barrel. I shot a few PBR with acceptable accuracy at 25 yd offhand. I will have lots of work up to do for shot loads.
