Anybody using smokepoles for spring gobbler season?

for the last two years I have used a CVA double 12ga. (after I take my first bird).

it works great,I wait to get a 25 yard shot or less.that way I know it has the punch to do the job.

I took my first spring gobbler with the B/P last year in the last few days of the season.I will be taking it again this year.

I just got a T/C cap lock and am still in process of finding the right combination of powder, shot, wads..shotcups...etc. I really like the lightweight and way it handles...will use it this yr. at least until I get a shot with it.

Ifly;..I don't use the shot cups,I just use 90grains of powder,a heavy cardboard wad,1 1/2 oz of #6 shot,a thick wad and then a thin wad.
that works great for me.good luck with the new gun.

Treeclimber: You use a thick wad over the shot?
We use powder, thick card, cushion wad, shot, thin card.

I've been getting my best patterns with powder 1/2&quot; fiber wad, shot then thin paper overshot card. I'm going to try the felt wads next.

You don't want the thick cards over your shot charge...your pattern will go all to he11! You have to go as thin as possible without the risk of knocking the card loose or those pellets will roll out the end. This is of particular concern when toting a double..

yes I use a thick over the shot. that is just the way I have always done it.it works great for me.
when I say a thick wad,it is a cardboard wad.I got them in a box of 500 at the gun shop.the thin wad is really like stiff typing paper.I do not use a coushion wad.

it may be wrong for different guns,but mine likes it this way.I have tried a lot of different ways.the thin wads would let my shot roll. checked it on several occasions and the shot was loose,so I started putting the thick over shot and don't have that problem.

I started off with small game (squirrels) then doves(you don't get many birds)but it is fun,fun,fun.while squirrel hunting is when I found the problem.

Those thick wads (1/8th inch or so) cause patterning problems. I couldn't kill a squirrel at 20yds..went back to the thin covers, cut back on the shot and powder and went on to take squirrels and turkey at 30yds...
