45 Auto
I was wondering whether anyone ever tried shooting a .451 200 grain 45 Auto Gold Dot in a .50 sabot from a .50 caliber 1/66 twist muzzleloader barrel? I was checking out the Green Hill formula and noticed the maximum bullet length for a 1/66 twist is .568; the 200 grain Gold Dot is .565 so it should stabilize. Should be a bit more energy than a roundball and a bit flatter. Just curious if anyone one else thought about it or tried it.

RE: 45 Auto
that 200gr will work but if it was me i would get some 230gr xtp bullets in 451. they hold together alot better than the 200s. i have tried both of them in a 50 cal cva long rifle with a 1-66and they worked good, but i only got to try them out to about 50 yrds. they did shoot round holes through the paper so i reckon they were flying stright but the 200gr bullets come apart purtty easy if you hit shoulder so if you do use them make sure you get a good rib shot.in a 45 cal cva with the 1-66 iused a blue sabot and a 38 cal xtp anddone well also.my friend used this 45 long rifle one season and killed two does and a mid size buck using the 38 xtp ammo, i think he was using 70 grs of powder. he said both the does went down the hill into the creek bottom before they went down and the buck took a back shot and hit the ground flopping, only copper jacket fragments could be found in the bucks back or that is where the back bone was. the shots on the does were pass throughs butthey did make some good exit holes.

RE: 45 Auto
I justgot back from my range; I was shooting a couple of my 1/66 TC flinters. One barrel is 21" long; the other is 31". They are PA Hunters with the QLA barrel.
I had some Goex 3f and Swiss 2f (#3); I didn't have any 3f (#2). I started out shooting some Goex and the carbine barreled gun at 50 yards using .429 200 grain xtp's. I worked up thru 50-80 grains but the barrel would burn no more than 70 grains; accuracy was under 2" at 50 yards. Then I used 70 grains of Swiss 2f; great accuracy and a bit more thump/speed for sure; but again it would not burn more than 70 grains and would print just a bit lower when I tested at 80 yards with 70 and 80 grains. My calipers read it at .605 bullet length and Hornady rates it for a 750-1700 velocity window; I doubt I can get it going more than 1500 with 70 grains of Swiss in the 21" barrel. Bullet prints were clean and no signs of tip/yaw or tumble. Next; I broke out the longer barrel and started with 90 grains of Swiss 2f; 3 shots at 115 yards grouped 3 1/2"; not great but not bad either for open sights. I was suprised they would stabilize but they showed no signs of it on paper. I don't know how they would track through deer but they do have more energy than a roundball. |
