1:28 GM Barrel 24" & 28"
I'm currently checking with RMC ref their flintlock barrels (which one or both will fit the Lyman Deerstalker). I want to shoot sabots outof it. Which one would be the better of the two (provided they both fit)? I know my Omega has a long barrel and it shoots great.
Load? I'm thinkingabout 100gr 2f / 80 gr 3f Goex under a 300 gr Nosler / 300 gr XTP Mag. I'm not sure what GM barrels are rated for as far as powder is concerned. Any thoughts? Thanks, HuntAway |

Do not know if this will help the thought processes any but I do have a 24 ss Remington 700ML and a 26" ss Rem. To be honest with you I can not really detect any dofference in bullet performance, but again I am not shooting mag loads. I know there is suppose to be a difference in velocity but they both shoot the 110 grains about the same in the same place... |

24" barrel at 040 grains = 0952. With a 28" barrel =1022. difference 70 fps
10 grain net gain------------084--------------------------074 24" barrel at 050 grains = 1036. With a 28" barrel =1106. difference 70 fps 10 grain net gain------------085--------------------------085 24" barrel at 060 grains = 1121. With a 28" barrel =1191. difference 70 fps 10 grain net gain------------117--------------------------085 24" barrel at 070 grains = 1238. With a 28" barrel =1276. difference 38 fps 10 grain net gain------------118--------------------------086 24" barrel at 080 grains = 1356. With a 28" barrel =1362. difference 06 fps 10 grain net gain------------071--------------------------070 24" barrel at 090 grains = 1427. With a 28" barrel =1432. difference 05 fps 10 grain net gain------------072--------------------------071 24" barrel at 100 grains = 1499. With a 28" barrel =1503. difference 04 fps 10 grain net gain------------066--------------------------061 24" barrel at 110 grains = 1565. With a 28" barrel =1564. difference -1 fps 10 grain net gain------------066--------------------------062 24" barrel at 120 grains = 1631. With a 28" barrel =1626. difference -5 fps Those are results using a 350 grain conical from an old Black Powder Hunting article (thanks to Rattus) |
RE: 1:28 GM Barrel 24" & 28"
Very interesting; less powder more difference. More powder, less difference. I wonder why? More time to build pressure when pushing the bullet? Probably something to do with pysics which I never took in school!

sabotloader,
By looking at underclocked's table I can see why there is little difference between the two. underclocked That table is a bit of an eye opener! Thanks again guy's. Someone(s) always has an answer around here. ![]() |

RE: 1:28 GM Barrel 24" & 28"
I just bought a .50 caliber21" Green Mountain Barrel with a 1-28 twist for my Hawkins in a flintlock. They were on sale for $95.00 so I could not pass that up. I figure I will tune it to conicals and have a great little tree stand rifle and stalking rifle in flintlock. How cool will that be?? :D:D
I am not sure if that would fit the Deerstalker. I lost or misplaced my chart and I could not find one on the Green Mountain Sight. Whether the RMC which also uses Green Mountain Barrels will have one.. who knows. |
RE: 1:28 GM Barrel 24" & 28"
It will fit the deer stalker I also ask about this brrel and was told it would fit my deerstalker that should be a good sabot barrel Dave

RE: 1:28 GM Barrel 24" & 28"
We will try lots of things out of it.. should make for an interesting rifle. I even have a Williams Peep sight that mounts where the rear sight goes and I was thinking I might throw that on there... should make an interesting little rifle.

RE: 1:28 GM Barrel 24" & 28"
Remember that shooting a fast burning powder like 777-fff you can burn more powder than you could even begin to using black, even so the differance will not be great with loads under 100grs. Also if you intend to use heavy bullets you ccan burn more powder in a shorter barrel. With a 300gr bullet and FFF you should be fine. Lee
