ffg or fffg

This is probably a dumb question. What is the difference in ffg and fffg. I know one says for pistols but can you use fffg in a rifle and isit better than the other. I have just been using ffg in my rifle because It said for rifles.

The FF rating deals with the size of the grains of powder.

1 F = cannon powder
2 F = rifle & shotgun (normally considered .50 caliber and larger)
3 F = pistol & small caliber rifles (.45 caliber and under)
4 F = priming powder

You can use 3f powder in rifles .50 caliber and larger. In fact some rifles do much better with it. But only your rifle will tell you whether it likes 3F powder better then 2F. If your rifle shoots well with 2F then I would stick with it. Although it is fun to experiment. I shoot 3F powder in a lot of my larger bore rifles with excellent results.

I like the 3f in my FL because it burns better and ignites better, also when I run out of primer powder you can use the 3f for primer powder and get by, this is important in the field and I have had to do it on a couple of occasions. Chap Gleason

Your question is better-answered by telling us what powder you use. Some powder brands have bigger granules than others - some powder brands are more/less moisture-retardant than others - some powder brands granule sizesare not the best choice for some gun designs.... etc...etc.
