GOT MY FIRST DEER
No miss, no freeze up, no glar, and the only problem I have. I gotta make some deer steaks:D
I went out after I got off work, worked over and had to go to the bank, set up in my "hunting partners" stand, still in my work cloths, raw beef, chicken and pork smell, Lined my scope up, BOOM, started cussing thought I missed, it ran closer to me, reloaded in less the 30 secs (not bad, for someone that has not worked on that). THOUGHT it was a another deer put it in my crosshairs, BOOM. watched it flop around and run. claimed down. looked, too dark to find any blood trail. grabbed my head lamp. went in to a farm that I can not hunt. found a the doe I shot. My uncle came up and help me get it back to the house. Cleaned it up, found 2 SETS of bullet holes in it. both where lung shots NO MEAT HIT AT ALL. I am going to change bullets next year, I want some blood trail. I got lucky I found it. Knight usak 85 grs pyrodex p .430 240gr xtp tasco bucksight 3-9 x 40 #11 I am hoping to have some picks later. I got some corn feed, hay feed, apple feed, barly feed, meat on the table. |
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
Congrats!

RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
Well with that load and XTP you must have had some massive internal damage to the lung area... I am surprised it managed to run all that far. But Congratulations. How far away was it from you when you shot? I take it you had no pass through?
I bet it feels good to have taken a deer with the muzzleloader... Again, congratulations. I knew you'd do it because you never gave up..!!! ![]() |
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
first one (I thought it was a miss), about 50 to 75 yrds, pass throught bullet did not expand [:@] entrence and exit the same did not hit any ribs, second, <25 yrds, exit about the size of my index finger smashing a rib on the other side. one of the 2 blow the bottem of both lungs apart. ran maybe 20 yrds.
had too much smoke after the first shot to see where it went after the first shot. and the whole group played the shell game on me.[&:] about 6 in the group, I had to shot the closest. |
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
what slug did you use?

RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
thanks I think chap, I have read every theard on it. barnes and noslers are little out of my price range/bullet. I do have an handful of 250grs golds that a member sent me to try, I may try one of those out of it. they group the same as the xtps I use now at the same charge. also have some shockwaves that fire well. also got some 45 cal xtp 250gr I may use.

it is ok chap, I did not think I was going to get on this year either;). But for next year, I am going to work with some conicals too.

RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
Congrats Mr. Unlucky;)
Have you tried a Hornady great plains conical or even a powerbelt? I say you need to sell that picky shootin inline and buy your self a PRB shootin sum'gun :D:D |
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
my usak is not picky, I am, I have groups about everything I have put though it. I got some tc maxiball 350gr. it grouped great with 85grs of pyrodex p, but I am going to lower the charge, it hurt alittle.[&:]
I got some 245gr powerbelts that grouped well. I am going to pick up some great plains down the road |

I say you need to sell that picky shootin inline and buy your self a PRB shootin sum'gun :D:D Lets let him get a few under his belt before we try to graduate him to percussion or FL. the Knights are good shooting rifles, he just needs to solve his jitter, buck feaver, or "fumbleness" before he tries a harder rifle. RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!
I've had good luck with 300 grain XTPs so far. 2 for 2 with them, but I prefer Barnes Expanders if the rifle will shoot them accurately. As for cost, $1.00 each isn't bad if you don't waste them all on targets. I like to get the rifle on paper with cheaper bullets, then switch to the Barnes and fine-tune the adjustments. ;) When I get it zeroed I save the rest for hunting. |
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
He can buy a percussion:D:D
Corey, Recoil is fixed with a Limbsaver recoil pad. You can buy the slip over to make it easier. Worth every penny. |
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
chap, I am planning on getting percussion sometime next year. and keeping the knight. I love how the knight shots. just want a little more fun.:D;)

RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
Congrats on the deer. You want pass through and a blood trail? Pick up some Barnes 250 or 300gr Expander MZ's. You don't have to shoot them year around seeing the are pricey. Do what I do, shoot bulk bullets for fun and hunt with the Barnes. I didn't need blood trails this year with the Barnes. The first one went 15-20 yards, fell within sight. #2 was a boom-flop.

RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
Corey,
goto: http://www.prbullet.com/knhp.htm They do as advertised, trust Me. I use the 360 grain on 80 grains of Pyro RS in a T/C black diamond, leaves a baseball sized exit wound and a blood trail Stevie Wonder could follow. Slack |
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
Corey, I had the same problem that you are describing. Lost 3 deer after hours and hours of searching. I switched to the all lead precision rifle dead centers and have not lost a deer since. None have run over 30-40 yards. I kept hearing "it's the shot placement, blah, blah, blah". Bullet holes consistently touched with the XTP's, they just didn't kill deer quickly. I seriously doubt my shooting has improved that much at close range, less than 40 yards. It all had to do with the bullet for me. I don't like to be an a** but Iget sick of people talking s**t. I now use the precision rifle dead center 220 grain bullets and 80 grains of 777. I'm sure you've seen the posts but here is a picture of a bullet recovered from a buck that I shot this year, probably 25 yards, straight through the shoulder. It held together extremely well and he went down withing about 25 yds of where I shot him. I bet the 220 grainers will shoot pretty close to where the 240 xtp's shoot. If you want, email me and I can send you a few but they aren't cheap. Spend a little more on your bullet andfind one that will do thejob. Here's the bullet from "shoulder boy". See ya, Greg

RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
OMG slackdaddy, I almost tried some of those this year. I just love the PR bullets. I hate to get away from the light bullets and reduced recoil though. Any pics from the KNHP's? Thanks, greg

RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
I just getting started this year with ML. and getting my first deer with a $40 knight usak, pitting problems. I hit further back then I really wanting too, but it did the job. still got a lung shot. I got some bullets I have been working with that I may switch to finish the season with.
thank yall for all the help, putting up with all my crap. I feel releaved, hell I was about to quite hunting :( One under the belt. I hope more to go, mainly this season. |
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
Corey, practice by shooting off hand at the range more often. Also, what happens when you see a deer? Your heart starts pounding right? Run around for a bit, get your heart beat up and keep it up while you target practice.

RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
depends on how my day went, if I had a very stressful day, like last monday with I the scope problems. which how my day went today it was fix.
I will try that, or just walk more often to the 100 yrd target, uphill about 25degrees |

Well said Chap! I agree 100%. Once you find something that works and works well it makes ML hunting a LOT of fun. Discouraging and upsetting otherwise. Buy quality and figure what your gun will shoot well. Good luck Corey, Greg

RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
I am going to try a gold dot next time.
little up date. skinned and 1/4 the deer. got looking one shot was a gut shot. the other was a lung. I don't feel too bad now about shooting it twice. both passed thru. one left the same size enter and exit. the other the enter look almost like I grazed it, the exit was just a little larger but no by much. it broke a rib. STILL DID NOT HIT ANY MEAT :D;) I went on and cut down the back straps into small roast. I am going to work on the hams and fronts tommarow if not monday. I am ready to go out and get another deer. lol |
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
Congrats on the deer.
|
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
congrats
|
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
went out this afternoon and looked where I shoot her. there was no blood trail. I really don't know if it was the bullet or the placement or both. I had everything going wrong on finding this deer. cloud cover, dark, and it ran to a farm I can not hunt. and I still found it with all that could go wrong I found it in the dark, with a crappy flash light, and no blood trail.
mr. unlucky got lucky :D |
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
You're hooked now! You're in big trouble, LOL!
|
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
shheeeshh don't tell my wife lol
she has already asked, "you got your deer for this year do you have to hunt more" |
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
Hell, I've killed 4 this year and I told her I was done! I was informed that I needed to go out and hunt some more. Lol, I've got the good life. If it wasn't for backstrap and jerky I might not have the same freedom. Good luck Corey
|
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
jerky!!!, hummmm, my wife does not like deer but she like deer jerky. that gave me an idea.
|
RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
Hey, u gotta play whatever angle works best for you. My chest freezer is probably 3/4 full with 1 gallon ziplocs of deer meat waiting for processing. Hot links and chili here I come. Play on the girls weaknesses. It got me a muzzleloader and rifle instead of just a bow. Good luck!!!

RE: GOT MY FIRST DEER
