VariFlame Question
 

I have set up the variflame system. It might be the small rifle primes i am using but i cannot get them to go into the supplied primer adapter. I have to use pliers to get them to go in. I bought some CCI small rifle primers but they are the precision ones. Then once i took it to the range i had alot of miss fires out of my Knight Long Range Hunter, it would simply not go off sometimes. I dont think the prmier was seeded correctly in the adapter and the firing pin never came in contact. When i did get these to shoot well i was 1 1/2 inches high at 100 yards and 14 inches low at 200 yards using 110 gr of 777 FFF with a 250 grain harverster scorpion. Just for kicks i through aWinchester 777 primer in there and fired it at 200 yards, it was only 4 1/2 inches low. here is what i have found.

Harvester 250 scorpion
110 gr 777 fffg
powerstem plug for knight

Variflame with small rifle primers
100 yards - 1 1/2 inches high
200 yards - 14 inches low

777 primers
100 yards 3 inches high
200 yards 4 1/2 inches low

Any suggestions why it was so hard to load the primers in the adapters and why i was getting contact all the time with the primer to ignite the charge?

You need a primer pocket cleaner after several uses carbon builds up an make the primer hard to load

The primer jackets were new, they had never had a small rifle primer put in them. I was having problems loading them right out of the package.

Bo,

Take the empty primer cup and insert it into the priming handle and then set a primer on the other black disc with the pimer side facing down (open side of primer up) the gently cover the primer with the primer cup that is in the primer handle and the push very hard to push the primer into the cup. Once you get the hang of it then it goes very fast. PM me if you have any more questions.

I soak the empty cups in windex and after they have set for a few minutes then I use a Q-tip to wipe them out and they are good to go.Set them out to dry for a while or do like I do and use a blowdryer to quickly dry them.

I also use the same setup with no problems at all. It really helps to have the little tool kit you can buy with them. Or use a deepwell socket and punch. That would work. Can't remember the exact size needed. I really like the VariFlame sytem...works great for me. Something must not be right. You shouldn't be getting any misfires. Prolly need to seat the primers better. You gotta give em' a couple good taps to seat themgright. goodluck....

I recently got the vari-flame kit, but haven't really used them enough to give a report.
I'm using them in a Traditions Pursuit Pro, and they seem to be fine with the small pistol primers I'm using. Good ignition every time so far (maybe 15 shots total), and no crud ring with T-7 (but it was light with regular 209s).
They are getting dirty after only a couple shots. Guess a primer pocket brush would be a good idea.
They are a bit hard to get the primer seated in, but I cheated and used a vise to push them in.
