100gr Pyrodex & 300gr XTP =

Bang - flop!
Had a chance to try out the Traditions PursuitPro .50 in the rain today. It rained about all day. I hunted a couple hours this morning then had to go to work for a few hours. Finished up in time to take my 7 year old and hunt for an hour this evening. It was raining when we went to the blind, and picked up even more as the evening went on. I looked at my watch and with only about 20 minutes of legal hunting time left told my son we might as well pack it in for the day. Got out of the blind and took a few steps when I looked out across the field we had been watching and one walked out at about 60 yards. Asked my son if I should shoot - it means we will get home late - and he said YES!
Quartering toward me, I was able to take a rest on an old fence, put the crosshairs on the shoulder (trying to keep the bullet path out of the intestines) and squeezed the trigger. When the smoke cleared it was laying right there! Entry wound was big and the lungs were pulverized! I couldn't find an exit, but I was rushing to get out of the rain. ;)

Turned out to be a button buck, but it will be good eating. Tagged & in the processor's cooler as I write this.

Well a 300 grain XTP might not get pass through but if it wipes out the lungs that is all you need it to do. Even if it had run, it would not have went far.

Those button bucks are not only great eating but do no damage really to the herd population as there are always bucks around to handle the duty... And when it comes to eating, they are great. Congratulations on the deer. I am sure your 7 year old will remember that afternoon for a long time, as will you.

Nice going wabi. Be sure to cook some up in a brown gravy with button mushrooms. As Martha Stewart would say - It's a good thing!

Funny you mention it - that's what we had yesterday evening. :D
My son loves to hunt with me. He's been along for a few bow kills and he loves deer meat so he's always excited when I get one. My wife works second shift and I have my son with me in the evening. I can feed him backstraps in brown gravy with mushrooms and biscuitsevery evening and he always cleans his plate.
This makes the second button buck this year (I killed one with the crossbow) and the first one has made several memorable meals so far. My wife likes roasts and she can make them very tasty. The buttom buck(s) supply some tender roasts, too.

As for memorable, yes, but I'm not sure ifI'll remember the good points or the creek that flooded after we crossed. Had to leave my son at the blind and go get the landowner's tractor and hitch a trailer to it to get my son and the deer out. I also managed to fill both my rubber boots with water during the process, too. [:@]

It's all worth it, though. I can almost taste the deer meat out of the old cast iron skillet after it's simmered in gravy for a long time now........:D

That's the permanent tag from the check station. We have to put a temporary tag (paper) on before the deer is moved. I carry some small ziplock bags & plastic cable ties to put the temporary tag on with. Fill out the tag, put in the bag, and fasten it to the ear (or antlers) with a cable tie. The gal at the check station complimented me - said it was the first dry tag she could read today!

Just remembered another detail. This was the first time I've ever fired a shot with the muzzle of the gun covered! I decided it would probably be a good idea to put a small balloon over the muzzle when we were getting ready to go hunting and my son was playing with balloons from a package my wife got him. He selected me a couple green ones (green is his favorite color) for good luck, and I put one over the muzzle. Never even thought of it until just a few minutes ago. Guess I'd better shop for a bag of green balloons for future wet-weather hunts. :D
