Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
Well rock lock guys, you're getting another member. About five minutes ago I pushed the "Submit Order" button on the Midsouth Shooters Supply website for a Lyman Great Plains .54 flintlock.
Really agonized over the 1 in 32" hunter barrel vs. the 1 in 60" round ball barrel. Ended up ordering the 1 in 60. I think I was influenced by the fun I'm having shooting the .58 Zouave with PRB's. LET THE QUESTIONS BEGIN! Anyone have any recommendations as to what flints to use and where to get them? |
RE: Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
Now that's funny.. I had the same sight up, selected the same rifle. And a matching 1-32 twist .50 caliber barrel for it. Was about to hit the submit button and was able to talk myself out of doing so. Glad you did not talk your self out of it. You are going to love the rifle. My friends shoot them and they are awsome to shoot.
They take a 5/8th Thomas Fuller Black English Flint. They come with a Lyman Agate which is a great stone. It will give you about 45-60 shots before you need replace it. Be sure and shoot black powder. 90 grains of Goex 2f and a .530 or .535 ball will work just fine with a pillow tick patch. Good luck. Glad you bought one and I did not... |
RE: Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
Thanks cauygad. If it comes with a flint that will last 45 shots or more that might ;)take care of my first range session. Gottaorder some of those Fuller flints pronto. Also got to start a search for a BP source. The one shop within 20 miles that carried it no longer does.
I know why you didn't push that "Submit Order" button - a vision of a KRB kept popping into your head. :D:D |

I buy my goex 3F from above I just ordered 10 cans and split it with a Buddie All orders on the Internet no matter how much you order are only $3.95 for shipping :I think no one beats them but you will have to pay the hazmat which is $20.00 upgrade your vent liner and some black English flints from TOTW and you will be set 3F can also be used as a prime powder for the flint lock pan remember only 1/3 of powder in the pan and if you remember tap the charge away from the vent liner for faster ignition |
RE: Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
Thanks for the poop lonewolf. All of the guys I shoot with are dedicated in-line / T-7 shooters. Looks like I'll have to put out a notice on a local hunters forum to find a BP buying buddy.

RE: Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
I sent out the $$$ for mine a few days ago. I to got the .54 1:60 twist flintlock:D. I bought mine off a forum and paid $300 Shipped. I'd rather give forum members my $$$ than a company. This will be a fun build and one i WILL take my time on and get it right the first time.
Now back to work on the deer creek! Im polishing the barrel. |
RE: Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
If you decide to shoot 3f black powder, you can use that as a prime powder as well. I have 4f when I shoot on the range, but always hunt with 3f as the primer powder. Also a small powder pan flask is a real handy thing. I get my flints from Cains Outdoors. http://www.cainsoutdoor.com/cart/asp/catalog_index.asp I buy my powder from Graf's & Sons. http://www.grafs.com/powders/3522by the case. There are lots of shops that carry supplies for these rifles. I am still tempeted to buy one as I personally believe after the first of the year you will see the price on them sky rocket.

You guy's and your 54's...:DI might just have to bite the bullet, so to say, and git one myself. lol :DI'm still working the bugs out of my .50 GPR Flinter..... I really don't know how people can shoot these things at 100 yds and be consistent with open sight.[:o]My max range right now is 50 yds.
As for flints I got mine from October country in bulk (Thomas Fuller Black English). I'm not sure how their prices compare to the other's previously mentioned..... Nevermind they don't have them on their web site anymore..[:@]Man, I'm glad I got a bag full of them. They do, however have other styles of flints. http://www.octobercountry.com/products.php |
RE: Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
What kind of bugs are you having with your .50? I used to have hell just getting my old cva and the traditions flintlocks to go off until i bought the tom fuller flints lol. The cheaper ones are crap. Getting your priming done right makes the difference in weather you'll hit the target @ 100 yards.

RE: Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
What is it with you,...LOL...First you get the Zouave that is just like mine and now you get a GPR, like mine..Well, at least the rear sight on your .58 is different from mine....just kidding
You are gonna love the GPR, mine seems to favor hotter charges with .535 balls. I hunt/shoot with90 grs of 3F but have shot it with 110 and it still holds a great group. Dropping the charge much below 90 and the groups start to open a little. Last time I ordered Englishflints was from here: (They had a sale and I ordered a bunch) http://www.logcabinshop.com/ But looking at the present price I think you can do better. Your gun will use 5/8 or 3/4 flints, the smaller give a better spark for me but the large last much longer. After I hardened the frizzen and polished things up, I can easily get 40-50 shots out of a good flint befor I need to mess with it, some go longer and on occasion one will chip and go shorter. I'd get the top pan charger, once you get it set, you can charge the pan with out looking...very useful if you need a follow up shot with the "enemy" at close quarters... Look into "coneing" your vent liner or just get one already done from (Ithink) Mountainstate ML'g. Coneing involves hollowing out the liner by the flash pan to sort of funnel in the flash...Do not open up the little hole too much! I am much better at doing these things then explaining them. Lastly, after a few season with my 54 GPR, I found I didn't like hunting with the gun. I'm a ground pounder and it was heavy, long, and at the end of a day it seemed a chore to lug around.-I'm a big guy but all my favorite hunting guns are little things). So, I bought a used Lyman Deerstalker bbl and fitted to the GPR action and wood, really came out nice. Now I have a 24" FLinter that walks fine and shoots good, it's a 50 but I've found I do much better with it off hand, especially at longer ranges. and I can still put the longer bbl. back on.. Doug |
RE: Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
I myself use the top picture and load the pan only depressing the plunger 2 times so it gives me 2 grains
|
RE: Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
Yeah, I regulated mine by filing off the spout to throw the desired charge, about half a pan in the GPR.

RE: Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
ORIGINAL: Semisane Also a small powder pan flask is a real handy thing. ![]() ![]() ![]() Which one do you recommend? It does not take a lot of powder to set mine off. And remember that, these things can go off without powder in the pan. For that reason, get a frizzen cover. It is a leather sleeve that slides over the frizzen and keeps it safe and no spark. Make a good safety feature if you have to climb a tree stand. If I have to transport the rifle, in Wisconsin all we need do is blow the powder out of the frizzen. It is then considered unloaded. But it could still go off if by some fluke, the flint was able to move along the frizzen. Something else handy is; http://www.widgetsupply.com/page/WS/PROD/dremel-diamond-wheel-1/BDL34 which is a diamond wheel. They fit in your Dremel tool. They come in real handy for hump back flints. Some of the flints you purchase are too fat! They have a hump in the center and it makes it hard for the jaws to grab it. With this wheel you can trim them down to fit the jaws. The rest of it you will find is trial and error if like me, you have no one to teach you. I am sure you will find this rifle one of your favorite rifles real fast. In my Trade Rifle, I casted some .535 ball and they do fit very well. Although I get better accuracy with the .530 ball. And as said, these rifles are powder hogs. I am still experimenting with mine and have had it two years now. I am constantly learning from it. Go to the dollar store and pick up some of them individual packets of isopropyl alcohol swab tissues. You can carry them in your pocket and use them to wipe the pan and flints off when hunting. You can swab the barrel with them but you have to be careful as they tear easy. |
RE: Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
Thanks for all the poop guys.
Hey Doug, if your Zouave had a sight like mine I'd have to sue you for patent infringement. |
RE: Went And Done It - Flinter On The Way
4grains is plenty in the pan. You wantthe powder to just be below the vent. When you start to shoot flint try to keep on the front sight and not the flash of the pan. It's a little distracting when you first start to shoot. Good luck with your gun. When you take a deer with it all inline shooters loose bragging rights but be ready to hear about it until you do.
