Bullet selection for Austin Halleck

know they are out of business but just checking to see if anyone has an Austin/Halleck and what they use for bullet?? I have tried PB's and then attempted to use Barnes Spitfires but couldn't get them to push down barrel (Too Tight). Any info would be appreciated.

I shoot an A&H and it is avery good gun.. Mine is very accurate...

I shoot 100 grains of T7-2f - MMP HPH-24 Sabot and either a 250 grain or a 300 grain Speer Gold Dot... these bullets are bonded and are very good bullets...

Your bore is not big enough to use a Normal Barnes bullet and sabot. You need to go to a thinner sabot...

MMP HPH-24
MMP HPH-3p-EZ load
Harvester Regular Sabot
Harvester Crush Rib
Hornady Low Drag Sabot.

Hope this information helps you...

ironrangerMany of use buy our bullets in bulk and use the sabot that fits our gun best, there are a number of different thickness sabot [ the thickness of the petals is what controls the fit. I have a friend that uses one he also uses the MMP-HPH 24 . Lee

I have two of them and both have a disctinct preferance that is the same. They shoot the Precision Rifle Bullet Dead Center 340gr awsome. Scoped (had to try it though illigal to hunt with here) I can get sub one inch groups at 100yds. 100gr of 777 FFg.

Alternitively the 405gr Powerbelts pushed by 100gr 777 FFg is a very good performing load also in my guns.

Learn your bolt real well. Adjusting them is key to enjoying shooting that gun and having it go bang everytime.

Thanx Sabotloader and Lemoyne, I found those on the web and may order a bag to try them. Where do you order your bullets in bulk may I ask?? I was checking my Midway USA catalog but have time to dig into it to see if that would be a source. I really appreciate the information as this will help alot!!

Jason, I tried those dead centers and they did shoot well. I could actually get them down the barrel. I found the same thing with the bolt and think I have it adjusted fairly well now. Experienced a few miss fires along the way to gettin there. Thanx!!

Here is the Gold Dots in bulk, 50 for $16, can't beat that for a good bullet: http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000213974

Chap

PS. SabotLoader likes to shoot 250g for deer and 300g for elk. I like the 300g for more down range energy, and they shoot thru a deer and make trailing easy.

RE: Bullet selection for Austin Halleck

ironranger, no. The one he quoted is the right one. The one you showed is for a 50 S&W pistol or something - it's a 50 cal bullet. We shoot 45 (or some 44cal bullets with sabots). You'll also need to buy some bulk sabots: 50/45 cal. That's 50 outside diam and 45 inside - the size of the bullet. You may want to buy some average thick sabots like these http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=0011550096and some really thin ones like these http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=00072H15045BRlike I just did. That way you can find out what works best in your rifle. The sabot makes a lot of difference.
