300 grain SST good for deer?

I am asking in the muzzleoading forums because I am sure that a bullet is a bullet. I am using the Hornady SST 12ga. shotgun sabots and have heard mixed thoughts about knockdown power of this bullet and lousy bloodtrails.

i have used the 250 grain SST to good effect. The 300 grain SST should do well also.

Is the XTP the same thing?

"Is the XTP the same thing?"

No, it is not.

If your load is accurate, and you have good velocity, that should be a good load. The 300 grain Shockwave was the bullet for a long time, then people moved to the 250 grain. I would say, place that 300 grain in the right place and you will be eating venison.

the xtp is one hornady's hollow point bullet for handguns. I am going to use .430 (44cal) 240 gr xtp in mine this year. who know what I be using next year. first year muzzleloading myself.

If I can get one of the cowardly things to stand still long enough I will let you know how the 300's will do on deer. I know they group great on paper. Im using the shockwaves which are the same thing. I just aint seein any deer..this has been a rough season so far. 50 hours in stand with bow and now over 20 with the ml.

As a rule of thumb the heavy bullets open slower, one bullet is not good for everything, I use the 250 either SW Gold Dot or XTP for deer they start out faster open faster and seem to be just right for deer, but for elk or bear or moose the 300 is better.
An exit hole on the far side is important for a blood trail beyond that the footpounds of energy spent on ground trees ect does not help bring the animal down sooner which is why the 240 or 250 or 260 is better suited to deer it spends most of its enegry in the deer and has just enough left to blow a nice hole for an exit for a blood trail. The 300g have high sectional density and higher BC, therefore more more down range energy. They shoot thru the deer and give better blood trails. I agree they open slower and penetrate deeper, but sometimes you need that on a big buck. Chap

This buck staggered about 25 yds after being double lunged by a 300 gr Hornady SST with 100 gr T7 2f from my Omega. Complete pass through and a blood trail a blind man could follow.

My only beef with them was that they were a bear to load. I have some different sabots that Sabotloader sent me to try with them. Hopefully one of them will be the ticket. They were accurate with the supplied sabot but I'm hopeing thatthey can be improved upon with a different sabot both in accuracy and loading ease.

gleason.chapman, I have been shooting right through them with a 250 and 110 gr of 777, two so far this year and I get a bang flop where when I used a 300 gr they usually run at least a 50 or 60 yds. I have been using Gold Dots, all 250gr are not manufactured the same; I have had much better results by saving the 300grs for the game over 500 pounds. I really dont see the point of having to trail them when I can get a bang flop every time with a 200or 250 gr. Lee

Using the 12 ga. shotgun sabots.

I shot a doe at 165 yards last night and it blew the top of the heart off. It ran maybe 30 yards. My brother had similar results with a doe at 80 yards, but their was only the bottom portion of the heart left. Most of the rest was decimated. These bullets do very good internal damage. Blood trail? I didn't pay attention. My deer didn't run out of my view. I simply watched it drop. My brothers was the same way. So obviously they didnt run far enough to worry about a blood trail. These shotgun sabots get my unofficial Juan Valdez seal of approval. I may be using them in my new Optima Pro.
