Last One _ I Promise

This the last one - I am out of parts... in fact I am still missing the wedge plates for this one... but they are coming...

This is 54 cal and I am going to try to shoot PRB's from it. Last weekend I was shooting in the rock pit and a couple of folks from a local traditional ML club were camped next to the pit. I asked them if it would be alright with them if I sighted in an ML... well to make a long story short and after shooting their flintlocks - really old ones... we got to talking about shooting. They shoot gongs quite often at different ML gatherings around this area... well I am always up for shooting so now I gonna give it a try, either using this 54 or my Lyman TR 54. I know the 1/48 will a limiting factor but it will be fun to try...

I know the feeling.. but you can never have too many rifles. That 1-48 twist with a patched ball will surprise you. I know a lot of people do not like that twist for roundball, but they are a lot more accurate then most people can even shoot.

Dave, where do I start???

I have a box of Speer .530 round balls and Wal-Mart had some RS for $16... I do have the patches, forgot what thickness they are out in the truck... But what powder charge would you look at???

I found 2 Renegades for $200 each today. What should I look for, besides the cast iron skillet?

90 grains of Pyrodex RS and a patched roundball normally is their load. Although I have one that likes 100 grains of powder. Also you can shoot loose Triple Se7en out of them with good results as well. I never had an ignition problem shooting it.

The bore and the nipple area will tell you a lot about the gun.... If they will let you run a patch and a jag down the barrel - see what it feels like.. What caliber? $200 not bad if they is on good condition...

Oh you saw those sportsman's reciepts - Terry has not seen those yet - so you are right btter put em away... but I jist bought her a new battery for her cell phone - that otta account for supthen.

Well that is encouraging - I think those guys I ran into really do not think the 1/48 will do much and if it did you would have to load way down for accuracy... but if i can load a 100 of RS that should move that RB right along - OK might even try the T7-3f... thought that might burn the patch off????

When I shoot T-7 I put a bore button or wad between the patch and the powder. Actually T-7 works real good.

Sabotloader, For gong shooting you will want the most accurate long range set up you can get. I use 110RS and a 535ball with a ticking patch for the i-48 and 120RS with the same set up in the 1-66 because thats what shot the best at 150yds. Lee

Dang! the 1/48 will shoot that with a PRB... those guys told me that I would realy need to get a 32" 1/66 to really be competitive with them.

You are really getting me excited about this - I love shooting and I like shooting things... and I do like shooting off-hand... could be a lot of fun...

Sabot...Don't sell that 1 in 48 short...The original Hawkens were 1 in 48 as well...Now they were deep cut, not button rifling, but I have set up quite a few T/Cs for guys...If you are just target shooting, 50-60 grs is plenty...Make sure to try different patching, that is more important than most realize....I just go to WalMart and buy red pillow ticking, it's about .018 and pretty tough...

My custom .54 does have 1 in 72, cut rifling...Sounds like these guys probably had customs...You won't win at Friendship with that gun, but she will shoot inside 1 1/2 - 2 inches at 50, if you get the right combo...

I think they might have been - they looked really old and seemed to be awful authentic - but they were fun to shoot... one had a lot of creep in the trigger - in fact it was a single trigger full stocked all the way out to the end...

I have absolutely know idea how they run their shoots or how far you shoot but when somebody says "ya wanna shoot - i am all ears" I really hope to get to shoot in some of the local gatherings....
