I have killed a doe and a four point buck with a little 50 cal flintlock. I now have switched to a 58 cal flintlock. In both rifles I use patched round balls lubed with bear lard. The 50 uses 70 gr of GOEX 3-f and the 58 uses 90gr of GOEX 3-f.
The rut is about to begin and I like having the extra horsepower of the .58

Remington Genesis
Cabela's Pine Ridge 3-9x 40
Two pyro pellets
250 gr SST
Winchester 209
Bought the gun, scope, bases and rings last year for less than $150 after discounts and rebates. I feel like for once in my life I got waaaaaayy more than what I paid for.

Another long dead and buried thread has risen from the grave, originally posted 10/28/2007. Well, at least people are starting to use the "search" function!
To give my input (again), my early ML season is already over, and I shot my deer with a 300 grain Barnes Expander-MZ bullet fired from my Savage 10ML-II by 43.5 grains Accurate Arms 5744. Bullet went 3/4 of the length of the deer that was shot in the shoulder quartering towards and exiting just in front of the left ham. I wish I could post a picture of the recovered expanded Barnes, but I've never recovered one yet! They're the Energizer bunny of bullets... they just keep going and going...
