how many hunt only with ml's?
I was wondering how many of you hunt only with your ml during the rifle season in states its aloud?

RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
I have only used muzzleloaders for years. I like the challenge. Even if some people do not feel a inline makes a challenge. I hunt with all kinds of rifles, shotguns, and smoothbores.

RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
I do. I have no use for centerfire anymore. Flintlock/percussion only from now on.

RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
Have used MZ only for firearms season for 10 years, but then, I'm in a shotgun only county. I consider it an advantage and deserve no sympathy. :)

Hunt only with ML? I just can't do it. I like to sit in a stand with my bow - though I don't shoot anything with it unless I get a crack at a really good buck (not interested in blood trailing a doe through a lot of really thick pines and briars). And HEY, I love creeping through the woods with my .41 Mag Blackhawk. Can't leave my Browning 1885 45-70 home alone all season - it would come to resent me. And dang, what about the B-78 25-06 - it loves to kill deer, bobcats and coyotes. So many choices, so little time.
I switch 'em up throughout the season. Probably use a ML about 20% of the time. |

In Ohio firearms season allows shotguns, muzzleloaders, and pistols.
I hunt with a muzzleloader only. Although recent designs of shotguns and pistols now offer very good accuracy I started using the muzzleloader back when it was the best option (for me anyway) for accuracy and have never seen a need or had a desire to change. I think in the past 20 years or so I've killed a grand total of one deer during gun season with something other than a muzzleloader. A buck back in the 1990s with a .45 Colt single action pistol I was packing that day because of heavy rain. With today's inlines rain isn't that much of a problem, so it's 100% muzzleloader hunting anymore. I can still whack them with a .451 bullet, but I can send it their way a little faster. ;) |
RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
I deer hunt about 95% of the time w/a ML. Every once in a while I feel sorry for my 280 and take her out.

RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
I hunt with X-bow long bow and compound bow during the bow season and with a MZ in all the gun seasons I could use a High powered rifle here in AR I just chose to use a MZ. have since 1962. Lee

I hunt in rifle country but this year my browning 30-06 and leupold VX2 will be riding the pine. I've been shooting and working up loads in my omega and it really deserves a chance to bagit's firstdeer.I've shot it enough in the past year to know it's limitationsand Ilook forward to the extra challenge of the single shot.

RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
Muzzleloaders are all i will hunting with anymore , the general rifle seasons are a joke in the last two states i have lived in . Gave up hunting with center fire rifles in 1975 .
|
RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
I bring the ML and 30-30 during the regular season. If it is absolutely pouring rain i will take the 30-30, otherwise its the ML.
|
RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
Most of the time I do. If its raining I might use my slug gun or .44 mag carbine, then again I might not, just depends on how I'm feeling at the time.
|
RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
I gave up centerfire rifle about 8 years ago my flinter in number one hunting rifle inline next but it does spend more time in the gun safe.
|
RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
Most of my hunting since 1999 has been with muzzleloaders. i like the challenge of hunting with a muzzleloader. My shots are picked very carefully and i have let a lot of deer and hogs walk off rather than take a risky shot: As a result therehave been a lot of bang-flops.

RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
I do.
|
RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
Me too, but I rotate among my muzzleloaders during season. I figure if I go a couple of days without getting a decent shot with a particular rifle... it's the rifle's fault. ;)
|
RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
I hunt with a muzzleloader about 95% of the time. I do some bowhunting and I have a friend that has a soy bean field where if you get a shot, it is usually 200yds plus. If I hunt his place I will carry my 7mm-08. If I get some long yardage practice with my Omega, I may take it to his place. Won't be happening this year though.

RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
Muzzleloader only if it's raining I take my ground blind along.
|
RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
I will be honest and say that the ONLY reason I got a ML was because for the last few years in the area I hunt the only way one is allowed to take a doe is with either a bow or ML. I surely won't be giving up my centerfire rifle, but I am really looking forward to taking the ML out this year to try to get a little extra meat(and maybe the ONLY meat if I don't get a buck with a CF rifle!). I hunt a bit with a bow, but I have mighty little faith in it when it's time to get serious and put some meat in the freezer. I don't have the time that one needs with bowhunting, and have even less desire to see deer walking around me just out of bowrange. I might as well wave at them since the bow is pretty much worthless beyond little more than spitting range! This surely won't be the case with a ML!!

RE: how many hunt only with ml's?
I always hunt with a ML from squirrel(.32 & .40) right up through deer. Most of my ML are flintlocks. Friends of mine with their slug guns think I'm a little strange but I'm more interested in the sport. I've been shooting BP since the late 70's and always had meat in the freezer. Anyone that says a ML is a poor choice as a weapon hasn't probably tried one. I'm still with GOEX never having been big on Pyrodex with a Rocklock.
