anyone else get a letter from midsouth

Telling them their credt card information might have been stolen????
Got a letter yesterday telling me my credit card number may have been stolen......
sorry for any inconvienience.
Had to call & close that account and apply for a new number. That means I'll be without a credit card for over a week!
Looks like Midsouth will loose at least one customer over their lack of security! My wife says absolutely no more dealing with them. ;)

No I did not get that letter, andI buy a lot of stuff from them. Thanks for the heads up. I will give them a call right away. Something you might want to look into is a virtual card. It never gives the store your "actual" credit card number. I got one through Citibank.

Haven't gotten the letter, and hope I don't! As far as I know, Midsouth has a guarantee on the safety of online transactions at their site.

I tried to call them to speak to the accounting department. Needless to say I was put on hold and then the person I was suppose to talk to had left for lunch. I think they might be getting swamped with calls.

The letter said the "attack" was in late August. It came from outside the US and they have retained a computer security firm to investigate.
This identity theft is really getting to be a problem! Last year my ssn & personal information was stolen from my state's tax records! The state gave me 1 free year of enrollment with a firm that protects my finances by alerting me anytime an application for a credit card or loan is filed in my name. If I don't personallyapprove it it is denied and an investigation is started to find who applied!

Wow, I buy a lot of things from them also. Will look into this. This will kill their business.

You would be surprised how many businesses are not prpperly fire-walled. Worked for some folks who had a pretty good sized environmental company butwould not pay $30,000to get everything properly fire-walled. Yep, they got hit. Lots ofcompany secrets and bidding information gone into cyber-space.

I've only ordered one time from the and it was via the telephone. Was the information stolen only on web orders? I haven't gotten a letter yet.

I was concerned about my credit card info so I called Mid South and talked to Jerry Jordan about the security breech. He is what he said:
SQL Inject occured from Vietnam August 11 to 25 on primarily back orders (some orders that were commited to the dB every 3 minutes). Approximately 3/4 of a page of info was disclosed each injection, which was scripted. Rapid 7, who handled the TJ Max breech was employed and they found out the problem and plugged the holes. They continue to review all scripts/code.There has been no breech since August 25. I will continue to do business with Mid South, theysounded like theyare beingopen and honest about the breech and doing the right things to fix and prevent the problem in the future. Chap Gleason

That's probably about all they could possibly do. Even banks are getting hacked.

Well these days, what or who is not being hacked...

My credit card got hacked about a couple of months ago and the guyin the Phillipines got $440 out of the card through Western Union. The way it was done was one amount one day and the second amount 24hours and one minute later. The bank caught it and called me to see if I was using Western Union. The bank was Wells Fargo and they covered the loss. I now have another card number with them. You can call Western Union and have your name blocked so that no one can get money through them under your name. I never use them and found the block a good idea. I keep one account with only less than $900 in it just for online purchases. They tried for a much larger amount but the account was too small so they settled for two small withdrawals.

Got one of the virtual cards through PayPal yesterday. Looks like that may be the way to go fol ALL online transactions with the growing number of identity thieves using the internet.

Well I got my letter today and the number that may be in trouble is my new one that I got after the last episode. I guess I will have to check on the virtual card. This is the first time I heard about that being available. Not sure how it works but will have to find out. I do have a Paypal account so maybe that is where to check. I also have to check with my bank about my present card and will ask Wells Fargo if they do a virtual card.

I received the same letter the other day, but I did not take it seriously. I guess I better go back and look at it. The problem is I can not remember if I used PayPal or my credit card. If I used PayPal it will be on my PayPal history. Are you guy's saying that if I used PayPal then I will be OK?? Tom.

The PayPal virtual card generates a new mastercard number for each purchase, then deducts the amount from your PayPal account. Looked to me like a very secure system. It requires a download to install the virtual card account and once installed the virtual card window pops up whenever you check out asking if you want to use it to pay for the purchase. Also fills in all the information (name - address - etc.) for you.

The bank took one look at my letter and immediately cancelled my card and put me in for a new one. They considered it the same as a stolen card. I checked with both my banks, Wells Fargo and Chase and neither one does a virtual card. They had not even heard about such a thing. Apparently the Paypal card can be used for any online purchases so I will have to go check that out. I do have a paypal account so the setup should be easy.

Citibank does my virtual card. The way it works is you apply for your Citibank and their card. When you make an on line purchase with virtual card, it automatically enters a false number to the retailer and then approves the purchase when you tell it to. The retailer gets a fake number, and so does anyone hacking the site.

In fact when you make a purchase, the Citibank automatically see's your about to purchase, it opens the virtual account for you, and even fills out the form for you on the retailers credit card information area of the purchase. Plus you get cash back with every purchase if you like....

RE: anyone else get a letter from midsouth

From what I understand the number that they generate is only good for one purchase so if anyone attempts to use it after that it is non-valid. I think they generate a new number for each purchase that you make. My banks seem to be interested and are looking into but have not offered this yet.
