RE: Seems The Zouave Can Shoot - Wish I Could
If it were me Semisane, start looking at different sights on rifles that you like. When you find one you can focus on, then mount them. An easy front sight is a silver dime. Cut it in half and solder that to the barrel in place of the front sight.
I have some Remington rear sights I like. They are small, but have a bright white triangle on the shooter side to focus on and then you lay the front sight beat on top of the triangle point and let fly. They are about the most easy for me to pick up. Like I said, that is why I am drifting to the 1X scope. Traditions sells a 1X scope for $50.00 around here, so more of my rifles might be wearing them... Besides, Gander could not help you shoot better.. now me on the other hand :eek::eek::eek: But then I would have to build another gun rack as I filled the last one up. Enjoy your rifle. Do you think a T/C peep sight might work for you. I have one of them around the house, and they work well. They are good for long range, and you can take the center out and use it as a ghost ring... |
RE: Seems The Zouave Can Shoot - Wish I Could
i could easily help semi shoot better! I'll hold the rifle and aim while he stands to the side and pulls the trigger! He could easily take credit for the animal that gets wacked.
If a hunting guide can lead the person to the animals and the "hunter" gets to shoot the animal, why cant i hold the rifle and sight it in while the real hunter pulls the trigger? :D:D Now im loading up mu 54 and going shooting. Not really looking forward to it. Darn cold snap! Had first frost this morning and it doesnt seem to be getting any hotter. |
RE: Seems The Zouave Can Shoot - Wish I Could
You are gonna have a hard time replacing those sights, the barrel is very thin. Too thin for a decent dovetail and I'd worry about drilling it as well, which pretty much leaves out a scope. A tang mounted peep might be an option and you will need a taller front blade.

You're right Doug. I've been looking it over and I sure wouldn't want to cut a dovetail into it, and am a little concerned about a drill/tap job too.
What do you think - could I silver solder a base on it? |
RE: Seems The Zouave Can Shoot - Wish I Could
Maybe if you could find a less expensive version of something like http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=113778&t=11082005 ??

RE: Seems The Zouave Can Shoot - Wish I Could
Hey UC. Front sight's not the problem. I can modifythe original one pretty easily. What I'd really like to do is put a scope base on this sucker and mount a low power scope or red dot. I know that would look funny on a Zouave. But, what the heck, I want to hit stuff with it.

Waelll, in that case, there are always hose clamps. ;)

RE: Seems The Zouave Can Shoot - Wish I Could
I just took a look at mine, the rear sight seems to be held on with one screw, maybe you can find someone to do another just like it. Mine has flip-up rear leafs, if you flip up the tallest one you will see the screw.
I'd just fix up the front sight and make something to fit on the existing rear sight that was more friendly to old eyes. My eyes are really bad and I just make the front sight bright and the notch in the rear large and very defined(squared)...You are not gonna fling those balls much past 75-100 yards anyways.. Silver solder would work but you would mess up the blueing not to mention what a scope would look like on that gun...LOL Doug |
