RE: I leave Thursday October 4th for elk!
UPDATE: I got my NM Muzzy cow on opening day at 3:15 in the afternoon...I saw about 40 cows and many bulls and after having to back off twice because of bulls getting in the way I finally managed to sneak within 50 yard to take a cow on her bed. The T/C Encore worked perfectly and the T/C Shockwave bonded 250-grain bullet powered by 3x50 Pyrodex pellets did a fantastic job. Shattered one rib causing a major hole on the impact side and the bullet was found on the off side between the ribs andthe front shoulder...it was about the size of a quarter.
We found the elk bedding at around 9300 ft just like last year and I managed to take my elk less than a 1/2 mile from where my brother got his last year. The wind was really blowing (15-20 mph) and was coming up hill (I was above the cows) and it made it hard for the elk to tell I was there…all the cows were laying down and I had to wait for more than 30 mins till one of them stood up to stretch and then I had my chance. I had one cow that was laying down that was really close but the only shot was a neck/head shot and I wasn’t going to risk a marginal shot when all I had to do was wait. As it turned out the closest cow got a buy this time and I took a different cow who finally stood up. Many other hunters were complaining about not see many bulls but we sawone 5 pointer, four nice 6 pointers and one extremely nice 6 pointer in the 350+ class. They just weren't hunting at the right altitude as far as I could tell. The bulls were bugling and starting to fight when we got there andby all appearances the rut was just getting fired up. |

RE: I leave Thursday October 4th for elk!
Chap Gleason and Cayugad,
Thanks for your support...I’ll try and post a picture of the bullet and the cow as soon as I get a chance. I’m leaving tomorrow morning with my oldest son who just came back from Iraq and he’s going to help me on my Colorado either sex elk hunt. I would have applied for a tag for him but we were not sure he would be back fro the Gulf in time and he wanted to wait, maybe next time. I’ll let you know how things turn out… Barry |
