1991 TC White Mountain Carbine: Need update
 

Hi Gang,

I'm hoping you guys can help me get updated on this gun I bought 15 years ago. I plan on going on a hunt in NY state, so it's either get this going again or buy an inline. First, it is a beautiful 50 cal rifle, that never really shot that well for me. Certainly not with therange newer guns have. Maybe ok at 50 yds.I have the scope mounts and all. The book says to shoot a maxi-hunter w/90 grains of FFG powder. So here are some questions:

Can I use Sabots in this rifle?
Are there newer types of powder developed over the last ten years?
Is it worth scoping this rifle? It has an 21" barrell.

Any advice apreciated.

First off, welcome to the forum. It is good to have you here.

As for your White Mountain Carbine with the fast twist it has, it might shoot sabots just fine. As for the suggested load you mentioned. Try the maxiball with 70 grains first. Then if the group is good kick it up to 80 grains. You could also try maxihunters.

There are many new powders out there on the market. One of the more popular is Triple Se7en 2f powder.

I have the same gun. Maxihunters, especially the 275-320grains are o.k. My particular gun really, really likes 250 and 300xtp's with an MMP 12 sabot, 100grains ffg Goex or 80grains pyrodex "P". It also does particularly well with 300grain .458 Hornady HP bullets and an MMP orange sabot. My state has no restrictions on sabot usage so I have not bothered with experimenting with other conicals.

Thanks for your welcome and reply. What is my range limit with this muzzleloader? And what do you think of using the TC scope system?

Your range will be determined by how well you get a load worked up and how much you practice. As for the scope system, well I like a scope on a rifle. I just mounted a 1X on my Renegade because I like to aim better through a scope. Whether you need the scope only you can determine. First things first is work up a good load.

My brother has a TC Omega he picked up last season, and says I should retire my old TC and upgrade. I guess he is correct for the most part. Have a good season in the woods all, and thanks again. Mike

I have the same gun also, when I'm really serious about killing something, it's the first one outta the safe. Very accurate with 80grs of 2f Goex, a 240gr Hornady with a TC-HP sabot(black ones). Never could get it to shoot lead of any kind, I'd love to use a conical but not in this gun. Your gun has a 1:20 twist, the later guns had 1:38 and shot conicals much better It is without a doubt, the nicest walking gun made and it's real handy in tree stands due to it's short length. My personal preference is to stay with the irons but I hunt from the ground where shots are fast affairs and scopes just slow me down.

Befor you pump money into an inline, atleast shoot itsome and see what you get. I have a waiting list for mine, a couple of buddies arre lined up waiting for me to kick off so they can"have it"...LOL-(I've take alot of deer with mine and never any trouble)...

I hunt in NY State every year with a ML in their Shotgun season at my brother's camp. It is a lot of fun and a ML is a great gun for NY State regular season hunting. I have hunted there the last 7 years with a Kight Disc, and a TC Omega. This year I am going with a new smokeless powder Savage 10ML2, with a Bushnell Elite 3200 firefly 3x9 scope. I plan on shooting Parker Ballistic Extreme 275g. You will have a great time on a ML hunt in NY regular shotgun season. My brother told me that they passed a rifle law this year in our area, Stuben County, so that could change things as people can now take 200 and 250 yard shots in open field, which was not possible with shotguns. We will see.

As for the White, I have read that they are great conical shooters with Bull Stops, other people with the rifle will chime in on the sabots, several MLers love this rifle since it was designed as a sabotless conical shooter basically. Best wishes on your hunt.
