BSA Question

I bought a used .50 CVA Mag Hunter in line this year. Itshoots tight groups at 50yards. It came with aBSA 4x32 Scope.I average about 2-1/2" right and a whisker low of the Bullseye on a 50' Slow Fire Pistol Target at 50 yards (my range's rifle target).

I shot about 20 - 240 gr. T/C Mag Sabots today and tried to adjust the scope. I looked up the scope directions on the Web and it says that clockwise is down and right. My trouble.......the adjustment knobs are maxed out already. I can't go anymore higher and to the left.

Is it worth futzing with? I shot about 4 shots aiming 2" high and 2" left and they were hitting the black or so close I'm not lying much. Just wondering if there was a quick easy way to shim the mounts or is it not worth messing with?

RE: BSA Question

No, go buy a better scope. I bought the same type scope, BSA huntsman 4x32 compact, for my sks, i did not have it sight in yet. fired 10 rounds to make sure that everything was working on the gun. Looked through the scope, the crosshairs where all blow to hell. My bother in law got a bsa last year and the crosshairs broke on it on a 44mag lever action. I am one that pay alot for a scope, but I wouldn't buy bsa scope again myself. The people to came with to this forum can help you alot more than I can. I would get the same brand scope I use on my other rifles. I have a tasco on my 30-06, and I am getting another tasco. Moving one on my 30-06 to my ML and the old one on my ML. But if I had the money I would get Nikon, I have heard good things about them, there in the top half of the scopes and it is really good price.

RE: BSA Question

you can buy shims or some people have used pieces of soda pop cans. While the scope is not the best, you have nothing to loose with trying to shim it. If it does not work then you can decide what you want to do.

RE: BSA Question

Cayugad & Corey,

I appreciate the advice. Haven't decided what to do. I did a Web Search of Shim and Scopes and found some information concerning shims. I didn't know that you had to shim the base rather than the rings. Cans and old brass pounded into shape are the materials recommended. The general advice on the Website was stay away from cheaper scopes. I'm hurtin' if my X-hairs fall out as the fellow that owned the ML removed the iron sights. As my wife would say,

"What enormous world problem are you working on today?"

This is great as I have some spare time as I lost my job as Camera Man for the N.E. Patriots. And....I don't see the Sox getting by the Yanks n the AL Playoffs.[:o]

RE: BSA Question

Talk about cross hairs falling over. Many years ago (in fact I was 17years old,in my first year of college) I had aRemington Woodsmaster semi automatic Carbine30-06. The scope was a Herters brand. I had saved as much moneyas I could, working odd jobs, and money was tight paying for college and all. And Dad helped out and paid half and I paid the other half for my first, used rifle. When sighting it in, the cross hairs fell over. I was devistated. That explained why the person had sold the rifle. I had no money or time to replace it. Season was the next day. I hunted that year by adjusting the cross hairs to the center of the scope and let the deer get so close I could almost smell him. Shot five times at this buck and managed to bring it down. I think I hit it twice as I remember. Maybe three times. Walked out of the woods, took the scope off, and smashed it with a rock. My carbine had no sights either.

You could try shimming it quickly and see if that is a fix.I watched a gunsmith shim a base on a scope he was mounting for a person, but refuse to do it myself. In fact I bought a scope from Natchez.Com and no matter what I did, could not get the right adjustment. It was shooting a foot low at 25 yards and cranked as far as it would go. I called Bushnell and they suggested I shim the base. I sent it back, got a different scope (the same model), and the new one worked just fine when I mounted it on the same bases.

Personally, I would spend about $70.00 and get a Bushnell Dusk to Dawn scope for that rifle, get it mounted professionally if you are not able to do it yourself. And get that sighted in. I have a 1.5-4.5x32mm ona Black Diamond XR that costed me $69.00 and it has been a great scope.

you can buy new fiber optic sights from www.cva.com for pretty cheap. Take a look at the Simmons scopes. I have a cheap $30 simmons that does excellent and is clear.

RE: BSA Question

This will be my last post ever as in about 20 seconds I'll be laughed off the Internet. In my defense, I haven't owned a scope in 31 years. Remember that I was trying to move the knobs "counter-clockwise" to move the shot up and to the left with the BSA Scope......I was getting no movement? The knobs were real loose and I figured they were maxed out?

Just got back from the basement where I was messing with the scope. I turned one knob a little more counter-clockwise.....it came off in my hand as it's only theCAP protecting the "real" adjustment wheel.

Nice knowing you guys....have a good laugh. And thanks for the advice & help - I'm back to the range asap. The only thing worse that can happen is if BSA's attorney's sue me for slander after reading this one......I can't believe I could be that stupid at 56 years of age........

Man MCM, that gave me a good laugh. Done stuff like that myself - just never tell anyone about it. You should have said "I took it apart and made a few adjustments to the internals, and now it works just fine."

RE: BSA Question

:D Sorry man, but I had to laugh at that one. Don't feel too bad. Others have come on here admitting to far moreamusing incidents. Like forgetting to pull their ram rod and shooting it down range.

As for the scope, I had the same scope on a CVA optima for two seasons and it functioned flawlessly. I was shooting some pretty stiff loads out of that rifle to. I sold the rifle and scope and, as far as I know,it's still ticking along without a hitch.Thelens quality is OK and I wouldn't even come close to comparing it to a goodNikon or Bushnell Elite, but it's a servicable scope, imo.
