goex question.?
I picked up a pound of goex FFFg and was wondering. When i was shooting pyrodex p and fffg triple 7 i always used 90. Should i do the same with goex or drop my load down to 80? Im having a hard time deciding if the .54 flinter will be my main hunting rifle or the deer creek .45 Hate owning so many muzzleloaders!

RE: goex question.?
I shoot 80 in my .54...I'd start there and go to 100...
If you are trying to duplicate velocities of 90 grs of Triple Seven, you'll probably end up between 105-110... It just doesn't take that much velocity to kill with a .54 caliber round ball... In my younger days, I would shoot 120, then shot 100 for awhile, ended up at 80... |
RE: goex question.?
I would start at 80 and stop where ever the rifle was most accurate with the load I was working.. I shoot 90 but I use 2f in my .54 Lyman and New Englander.

RE: goex question.?
Allright cool. I loaded up the rifle with 80 grains and will wake up around 530am and see how well it does in the cold mornings. I just want to make sure it will still be on sight with this powder. Im thinking i'll more than likely have to adjust my sights down but you never know untill you shoot.

RE: goex question.?
Just finished up 50 yards with the .54 mountain rifle and i had to up my charge to 100 grains of fffg goex to get the thump that i got out of pyrodex and triple 7. Still seems to have a lot less kick even with 100 grains. Shoots 3" high @ 50 yards and that will put me dead on at 100. Im going to swab and try 75 yards later on today and then 100. So far so good. I also notice that it doesnt seem to go off as fast when i was using pyrodex or triple 7. That doesnt make any sense but i quickened it up by adding close to a full pan of 4g pan powder.

RE: goex question.?
I load 2 grains in my t/c pan flinter and when possiable always tap the charge to the right away from the vent liner:I would say the more powder in the flinter pan the longer the delay to set the main charge off.
I load 95 grains of goex 3Fa hornady 230 Gr. ball over a wad patched RB in mt 54 cal. renegade flinter |
RE: goex question.?
I'll give the less powder a try but the last time i tried that all i got was a flash in the pan. While i was cleaning, i noticed my flint was a little cocked in the jaws and only one small section of flint was hitting the frizzen so that was more than likely causing poor sparking. I got that fixed and its throwing sparks into the pan so that should speed it up.

RE: goex question.?
Load as recommended by the manufacturer.;)

RE: goex question.?
Bevel down will throw a better shower of spark to the center of the powder pan:Bevel up will get more frizzen surface but all locks have a mind of there own use tom fuller black English flints seem one flint will give me 65 shots or better.I also like missouri flints there are a good flint sell a little cheaper then tom fuller $8.00 a dozen great for target work and the flints last also I gotten 60 shots on one flint.I set up my flints not to hit square on the frizzen for range use I go with a little off-center only for hunting I have them hit square.

RE: goex question.?
Tried adding a small amount of powder and i just got a flash in the pan. I added a little over a half a pan full and it went off good. I started using my vent pick in between shots and it did a lot better. I was all over the target in the beginning, and then starts swabbing and it did great. 4" low at 100 yards so i adjusted it and ended up 3" high @ 100 which is where i am leaving it. With swabbing between shots i ended up with a 2" 3 shot group. Its ready for hunting season and im happy with it.
I use Tom Fuller black english flints and will only use them, they are amazing. I also keep it bevel down. I started swabbing after i had a killer of a time getting my 3ed shot down on a dirty bore. The first 5" of barrel fouls up badly and then once you get past that part, smooth as silk. |
RE: goex question.?
frontier...Sounds like you have a touch hole problem, not a lock problem...
If you are getting flashes in the pan and/or delayed ignition, your touch hole is too small, not coned or not located in the proper location, when you close the frizzen, the touch hole should be behind the heel of the frizzen... In other words, high, above the pan, but centered... |
RE: goex question.?
Everything looks fine but you can never tell unless you play with it. After hunting season i plan on deepening the pan a little and see how that does. It could also be the year old 4f im using but its been stored in my closet all of the time and doesnt get used much. Just have to try one thing at a time for right now.

RE: goex question.?
I don't think it is your 4F priming powder my 4F powder has to be5 years old think I still have a little less then 1/2 the can left.I would drill out your vent liner I here you say you use a vent nipple tool to clean out you vent liner sounds like the old t/c vent liners with the screw driver slot hole. The new improve vent liners have to be .070 .I would think take a old vent liner and open it up to .060 I use to drill out the t/c but I don't remember the drill size :another important thing to view is you vent liner is not below the priming powder pan and after firing the gun look and see if there is no smoke coming from the bottom of the trigger guard seen vent liners that are below the lock crack and split the stock in the lock area to to ignition under the lock itself.

RE: goex question.?
I got the priming figured out now and its doing perfect. 6 shots today, all on a dirty bore, 4 were bulls eyes while my first 2 with 80 grains were low @ 100. I upped my charge to 90 and thats when my last 4 shots were in the orange. Still shot a 2" 4 shot group so im pretty happy with that. I find that if i reload right away and then check my target, i dont have the hard to load issue. As soon as the goex drys up, thats when im screwed and have to force the ball down the bore. Next year i am switching out my sights with something different so i can see the sights better. May just order sights from deer creek and ask for the ones that are on their northwest rifle, Those sights are clearer than day.

RE: goex question.?
I find 5 shots max: before the patched ball start to get tight I use a wad under the patched RB I can go as many shots as I want no problem use one size bigger in wads like I use a 54 cal. in a 50 flinter and a 56 wad in my 54 flinter you may notice a big difference in tighter groups.
|
RE: goex question.?
I'll pick up some wads next time i go to the store. If they have them that is:D We're lucky that the stores around here even carry powder.
