First of all, where did those rules of muzzleloading come from? Is he still alive? He needs his a(!) kicked!!! Just kidding;), had a decent shoot this morning.:D

Details:
TC Omega, 3x9x40 Bushnell Banner Dusk to Dawn w/ Circle X Reticle set at 7.5X @ 100 ydsand 9X @ 200 yds (range lasered), .451 dia 300 gr Nosler Partition, 110 gr T7 FF, Winchester 209 Primer.

Both targets shot with same combination.

Conditions:
Wind quartering from behind left to right about 10 mph with gusts, mostly sunny with a bit of cloud cover, Temp 45-55' F warming through the shoot.

Target 1:
The first 2 shots are in the green and then they start to rise in order shot as barrel warmed?? or poor shooting[:@]Point of aim was the red circle.
I Chrony'd all five shots. Chrony was 9 paces from the end of the barrel.
1902, 1921, 1921, 1915, 1912 FPS, 5 shot Average - 1914.2 FPS

Target 2

The 3 shot group circled was shot through the chrony at 100 yds and yes the chrony survived[8D]. Point of Aim was the red circle. I didn't want to tempt fate with the way the wind was blowing so I stopped at 3 shots. Numbers are; 1555, 1580, 1573 FPS @ 100 yds Average - 1569.3 FPS

The 3 shots that are circled individually were shot from 200 yards using the green circle as a Point of Aim.

Sabotloader, do those numbers come up the same in your calculator?

What rules are you talking about? Please send URL, so we see if we agree with the "rules".

A lot of people have that problem in warmer weather with their barrels warming up, the sabot becomes soft and doesn't do the job as a gas check. One fellow name Harley even made up a Barrel Cooler by inserting a copper rod in the barrel:

I would say that is what the problem is, especially if the first two shots are touching, as they are in your case. I like to shoot from 8:30 am to 10:30 before the day heats up, if you shoot in the heat your going to get results like these. I use the Nosler Partition 300g (the HG Protected Point, notthe 45-70)in my Omega and Knight Disc and have had excellent results with it. Chap Gleason

Hey there chapman, It was a rule about what shot good yesterday, won't today. I can't find the link but I'm pretty sure cayugad knows where to find it. It was included amongst many others.

That was what I was using. the .451 partitions HG. I'm waiting on the 45-70's to come in the mail.
I started off early this morning and gave a fair bit of time between shots. Swabbing and such. Walking back and forth to the chrony..etc. It was cool to start but warmed up quick and brought out the blackflies in clouds.[:@]They may have had more to do with the stringing than anything. Did I mention I hate blackflies. lol Tiny little flies with canines three inches long. It's really amazing to see them flying with those fangs hanging out.:eek:

I found a ballistics calculator called Point Blank. I'm not sure how accurate it is but the numbers are pretty close to my 100 yds #'s with the muzzle #'s inputted. The BC I took from Nosler's site.

Right, 3" high at 100 yards and your shooting thru a 6" pipe from 0 to 175 yards with the Nosler, that is great. I use the crushed rib sabot. The 45-70 were NOT as accurate in my gun:

This was about 3 years ago and was with APP powder. Sabotloader sent me the 45-70 bullets.

putting in 300g, .199 for the BC and 1914 fps for the Muzzle velocity and 100 yard sight ingive me 4.3 inches low at 150 yards, whereas you have your showing .29" high at 150. Can you explain the difference to me?

Semisane’s Ten Laws Of Muzzle Loading


1. Whatever worked yesterday will not work today.

2. Whatever works for your buddy will not work for you.

3. No matter how much gear you bring to the range, you will need something you left home.

4. Heavier or lighter bullets will probably shoot better than what you are using.

5. Heavier or lighter powder charges will probably shoot better than what you are using.

6. The best muzzle loader to have is one that loads from the muzzle - lock style and ignition methods are not relevant.

7. The more people watching, the worse you will shoot.

8. Dry holes happen (see law #7).

9. You don’t shoot often enough.

10. You need one more gun.


you can't blame me this time.. this was semisane's doings. But I think Sabotloader put him up to it... :D

Question #1 - you indicate these are the .451's - did you get some .458's?

Question #2 - which stock do you have on your Omega? the laminated wood or the synthetic? If it is the synthetic then the warming barrel and stock pressure can/will move the POI... but there is a simple fix.

That is right at what I am clockingwith 110 grains... I am at1920fps ave. Elevation could make some difference - what is your elevation? I am at 2600' above sea level.

Nice to see these numbers - I have never shot over the chrono @ 100... I'll plug your numbers in the Barnes calculator and see what it comes with... Really close the calculator says 1590fps @ 100 and you are measuring 1569.3

With your 200 yard shots... you have a dead animal you are within the 6" circle that I often refer to from your POA.... GREAT! you gotta love Noslers... but they do cost money...

No! No! - I had nothing to do with it... I hate those rules they are so right on.... sounds like somtin Cdaddy would come up with but betcha Semisane did dis one al by himself... he just wrote what we mostly think most of da time....

and I disagee - I ain't looked at a new gun in weeks... well at least since the last time we were in Kennewick and I only looked - i did not handle it...
