Default Range Report

Back to the range today. Overcast and calm. Results were pretty typical for me. I figure I'll bore you with more mediocre results to ensure you keep the scopes on.

Started at 50yds. w/300XTPS, took them to 100 yds., then went to 200 yds. with the 10mm/200's, and back to the 50 with 240 XTP's.

Cabela's Hawken 50 cal
GM Barrel
Open Sights

Bottom pattern: 2 11/16"

50 yds
300 XTP's
90 gr. Selects

Top pattern: 2 9/16"

240 XTP's
100 Selects

100 yds 4 1/4"
300 XTP's
90 Selects

If there was a highlight, it was putting 5 sequential shots on the 12 inch target dot at 200 which was a first for me. Two things I've noticed; 1) this load shoots flatter than I start out thinking it will 2) this gun wants to put this bullet in the lower right quadrant. You can see the 3 stick-on dots covering the hits on this target from two weeks ago.

200 yds. 8 1/4"
10MM/200 XTP's
100 Selects

I think that is pretty impressive shooting on your part. I have the same barrel, so now I think I want to drag it out and see what it can do... Nice shooting.

yeoman, that looks like 10 kills to me....nice shooting. I still like those 300g xtps! I shot yesterday 300g xtp and 300g shockwaves.....didn't matter, at 100 yards with 100g of 777 powder they grouped the same.

Cayugad - what has been the best 100yd.bullet/powder combo you have found for your GMbarrel? Mine as you know is on a sidelock so maybe I should specify that the bullet needs to be pullable with a range rod screw in the event of a misfire or loading without powder.

That Green Mountain Barrel of mine shoots so many things well...

110 grains of Pyrodex RS and a 200 grain XTP is deadly.

110 grains of Pyrodex RS and a 250 grain Shockwave is deadly.

100 grains of Pyrodex RS and a 300 grain Hornady XTP with the sabot that comes with it ... does a real good job.

Remember, if you ever load without powder and can not pull that projectile. remove your nipple and with a nipple pick or tooth pick, just pack powder down the bolster, pushing as much of it in under the level of the nipple threads. Then replace the nipple and cap and fire it. That projectile will travel well over 25 yards and has a lot more power then you think, so be careful. That saves you from pulling any.

Be sure to aim at something you can see.. mark your ramrod for when you check you can tell if the projectile has cleared. When you shoot, you will see and hear that projectile go down range and hit cardboard or something like that. And if it does not come out the first time, repack the bolster with powder THEN RE-SEAT THAT PROJECTILE onto the powder.

of course, I never had to do that... But have seen it done many times. Also a good air compresser can blow them out the end of the barrel as well.

I guess I'll have to try the Shockwaves. I have worried about the bullet filled sabot getting clear to the bottom of the barrel where the powder added thru the nipple couldn't get under it, fearing the pressure might exit by blowing the nipple. Guess that doesn't happen. Thanks.

Oldrookie/Cayugad - are the sabots that come with the packaged 300 XTP's HPH-12's? Can't remember who Hornady has make them, though I think we talked about that in a post some months ago.

I believe they are the HP-12's. They fit nice and snug. And they shoot real well. Also they seem to have a lot of down range thump to them from their sound, but then that is no indication of how they would do on deer size game. Although I would bet they work real good.
