Ballistics for 300 grain Hornady SST
Does anyone have some approximate ballistics for the 300 grain Hornady SST? I know m/l ballistics are very variable because of primers, types of powder, length of barrel, etc but I am looking for something approximate. My gun range has no way to shoot more than 100 yards so I have no real way to see what will happen out to 125-150-200. I looked at the Dead Center bullet in 300 grain on their website and with 110 grains of ffg T7 they show 5.4" high @ 100 is dead on at 200. I doubt that will hold true with the Hornady bullet. Any help would be appreciated!

I do not have a sheet on the SST, but i do have one on the Speer Gold Dot. The Gold Dot does have a decent BC but it will not match that of a SST so the Gold Dot's trajectory will deterioratefaster than the SST. The other thing is I am only shooting 100/110 graions of loose T7-2f so my muzzle velocity shows up about 1750 fps. This might give you some idea though.... It is sighted in to be 2.4" inches high @ 100.. ![]() |

Thanks! Maybe a good guessimate would be an average between your ballistics and the Dead Center, one with a lower BC and one with a higher?

RE: Ballistics for 300 grain Hornady SST
The 300 grain Hornady SST has a sectional density of .210, a Ballistic coefficient of .250, and diameter of .452. With an average 100 grain load you will get a velocity of 1735 fps according to my charts. So you can plug all of that into a ballistic calculator and then start to figure ranges from there.
Here is a ballistics calculator for you to work over.. http://biggameinfo.com/BalCalc.aspx |

the numbers were taken right off the Hornady web site. You can look up any Hornady bullet on there and get the BC & SD for it.

the paper that came with the sst's i bought shows, 2 pyrodex pellets " 100 grains" 300 gr sst will be + 3.1" high @ 100, 0.00" @ 150 and -7.6" low @ 200. Aim at the top of the back and its going down.

Thanks! This has been helpful.
Question-has anyone played with velocities of T7 or other powders to see how much a 10 grain increase increases velocity? Just food for thought - the Dead Center .44 300 grain bullet is listed with a BC of .371 and with 110 grains of ffg T7 they say they are getting 1880 f/s out of the barrel on their website. |

One of the factors for BC's of bullets isvelocity. There is no doubt that at some velocity that the BC of the PR bullet could be that high. Somevery learned people have stated in most cases that PR overated their bullets BC in the avearge ML. Near 1900fps with a 110 grains of T7 seems high to me, but I certainly am not saying it is impossible. Another thought - if you are shooting an all lead bullet at that velocity - I would think that it might have a tendancy to blow-up if it were to strike somrthing solid... I shoot 110 grains of T7 with 10mm 200 grain Hornady XTP's and average about 2100 fps, 110 grains of T7 with a 250 grain Speer - I am getting 1860 fps. 10 grain powder boosts will make a difference but as you near the peak the amount of increase declines... so like going from 60 to 70 grains you may record a significant boost... but going from 100 to 110 the boost will not be as great. Here is an A&H target with some example velocities... My A&H was my test gun for several years... |

I use a 300 grain T/C Shockwave (same bullet) with 2 Pyrodex pellets. Sighted in about 3 inches high at 100 yards puts me pretty much dead on at 150 yards. According to thesheet I have from Hornady:
300 gr SST has sec. density of .210, ballistic coefficient of .250. With (2) 50 grain Pyrodex pellets here is what is listed: Velocity(fps)Energy(fpe)Trajectory (150 YardZero) Muzzle 100yds200ydsMuzzle 100 200 100150200 177015051284 20871509 1098 +3.1 0.00 -7.6 |

RE: Ballistics for 300 grain Hornady SST
I think the actual BC of the 300gr SST is .240, not the advertised .250.
|
RE: Ballistics for 300 grain Hornady SST
Changing the BC from .250 to .240 only makes about a .1" difference at 200 yards on the load I listed. In my book thats not enough to worry about.

RE: Ballistics for 300 grain Hornady SST
Guess it's no big deal...at least not like in centerfires at long range :D
