Help a Washington hunter understand the rule book
I live in Washington and will be hunting primarily in GMU 124. Now if I am reading this right, since I am hunting with a muzzleloader I only have a season from Oct. 6th through the 12th and no late season? I mean heck, the whole reason that I wanted to hunt with a ML is because of the typical late season to where you can hunt darned near till Xmas. Hopefully I am just missing something or reading my book wrong, but if not I am pretty dissapointed...:(

Our house is all tore apart with some remodeling being done so I'm not sure where my regs are. But, I don't think you are missing anything. This is only my second year big gamehunting in WA. But the way I understand it is there is no general season. A unit might be open early or late, or both, just have to look at the book. If you want to hunt the late hunt, you have to look at a different area. That is the way it works for me. There is only one area open in the late hunt and it really isn't where I want to hunt. |

My dad has been hunting with ML for the past 5 or 6 years and he has always been able to hunt till close to Xmas or even a week after right here at home. But it looks as if that has changed. Hopefully I am just overlooking something, because if I only get a week to hunt then I got screwed. Rifle season is longer than ML season and you cannot switch back and forth.

Again, I don't think you are missing anything. Unit 124 is not open for the late hunt. Any chance you can hunt in Unit 130? It is open from Nov. 20-30.
Lesson learned, you have to look at these things before making your decision final (buyinglicense/tag). It was right in the regs. Things change every year. Check carefully next year, they'll likely be different from this year. |

Yeah, you are right. I made the mistake of ordering all of my tags online right after the new year before I had a chance to look at the regs. So yes, big lesson learned. It looks like I will be taking most of that week off from work to get my deer lol.

Someonesaid to carrya copy of this letter if hunting with sabots in Washington State: October 5, 2006 TO: Bruce Bjork, Chief, Enforcement Program FROM: Dave Brittell, Assistant Director, Wildlife Program SUBJECT: Interpretation of WAC 232-12-051 There has been some confusion and different interpretations provided to the public by the Wildlife Program, Enforcement Program, and the Regional Offices regarding WAC 232-12-051, and which projectiles are legal to use during muzzleloader season. A conference call was convened today that included Steve Pozzanghera from Wildlife Program, Dan Boes representing the Enforcement Program for Deputy Chief Jarmon, and Sheila Lynch, Assistant Attorney General from the AG’s office. The group reviewed the WAC and discussed the differences in interpretation. The result of the discussion was that the group agreed the stronger interpretation of WAC 232-12-051 referencing non-jacketed, lead projectiles is that this language was intended to prohibit the use of copper and other metal jackets used to surround the lead core of a bullet and to limit that type of technology. The language does not specifically prohibit other types of attachments to lead projectiles, such as non-lead tips plastic or otherwise, plastic bases, or plastic sabots. The Wildlife Program believes that this interpretation was the intent at the time the rule was adopted. This was also Wildlife Program’s original interpretation of the current language as written. Given the confusion over the interpretation of the rule language, and given Wildlife Program’s interpretation that lead bullets with non-lead tips, plastic bases, and plastic sabots are legal, the Wildlife Program recommends that the Enforcement Program not cite muzzleloaders for using those types of equipment. Wildlife Program also recommends that Enforcement Program circulate this information through the Regional Captains to all of the Detachments. That is the way I read it in the regs. Really didn't see it as being confusing or needing a letter.

Maybe it wasdue tohow the regulation was improperly misinterpretated and enforcedin the past.
