Measure my target
![]() I know there is some disagreements on groups and size or measurements of groups. Not that it should make that much difference. I actually think a lot of this has to do with how people measure them and by what means. First off this is not a "shot" group. This was made with the wonders of Paint Shop. But for kicks, I will have you measure that group and tell me how you read it. Each square is 1" by 1" so that should make things a little easier for you. We are not interesting in exact measurement with a caliper, just your educated guess and then maybe explain to the group how you do measure the spread of a group... |
RE: Measure my target
I measure just a touch over 1 1/4 inches...I measure from the center of each hole, between the two holes that are the fartherest apart...
|
RE: Measure my target
That is a 1 an 1/8" group. The two farthest shots being measured center to center. But the shots in that group are equadistant.
|
RE: Measure my target
I measure the outside distance between the two farthest holes and subtract the caliber size from the total.Harold
|
RE: Measure my target
Looks like 1 3/16ths. It's hard to get an exact measurement since your picture scale isn't perfect. Measuring groups is done center to center.
I stole your pic for a slight graphic enhancement. ;) As you can see the red lines are center to center. Since it's hard to find the exact center of a hole the best way is to measure edge to edge. The green, blue, and purple lines show the measurements I'd take and the longest one is your group size. If you measure the approxamate center to center you'll see they are the same distance as the other color lines. |
RE: Measure my target
Heres how I do it...this is an autocad / photoshop mix

cayugad
to me if groups meant a lot, it would be 1 1/2 group... I'd take this from a ML @ 100 - but more importantly it would break my clay pigeons - 3 times... Here is a pic of howI did/do it... ![]() |

INTERNATIONAL BENCHREST SHOOTERS
OFFICIAL RULES OF COMPETITION E. GROUP MEASUREMENTS 1) Groups are to be measured by any method approved by the IBS in one thousands of an inch. The Sweany reticule rule or its equivalent will be the only official measuring device used at all registered matches. In measuring groups fired with calibers for the caliber to be measured, the measurement shall be made from the extreme outside edges of the two widest bullet holes and the actual differential of the larger calibers shall be subtracted from the measurement read on the Sweany Measuring Scale. |

RE: Measure my target
In technical terms:
"That thar is jest over an inch - good shootin pard" |
RE: Measure my target
I'd go with wabi on this one.
|
RE: Measure my target
Well again, this was made on Print Shop, not actually shot on a range with a rifle. When I set the scale on it, the group was suppose to be 1 1/8th of an inch. So most of you are real close and must measure a target basically the same way I do.
|
RE: Measure my target
I heard FG measured it and it was about 1/4". :D:D:D Just teasing because I know he can take it.
|
RE: Measure my target
I came up with 1.125" when I looked at it (and before I read Dave's answer). Center to center is the way I learned to do it.
|
RE: Measure my target
I've always measured center to center on the farthest two holes. However, most of the time my measurements are more like: "yep, that'll kill a deer."
|
RE: Measure my target
1 1/8"
|
RE: Measure my target
I measure from outside to outside minus the caliber, but how do you measure one like this??
![]() |
RE: Measure my target
Outside of the 2 farthest edges minus bullet diameter is the same as center to center so either way is good.
However i believe Wabi is correct on this one |
RE: Measure my target
Yea Herman, with one like that you measure the largest diameter of the hole and subtract the caliber...Heck with Cay's example, I just grabbed a ruler and put it up to the screen....He threw me a curve, noticed today that an inch isn't a inch...:D

Cen -Cen 1.125 String 2.5 Lee |
RE: Measure my target
Cayugad, Would you mind doing that Paintshop thing with another target? Make it a 5/8" group. I've never seenone with .50 holes. Might be interesting.
|
RE: Measure my target
The easiest way I have found to measure groups is to take the two farthest apart holes and measure from the inside of one hole to the outside of the other. That will give you a center to center measurement without having to guess where the center is or have to measure outside to outside and subtract the bullet dia. Gives exact center to center with no extra steps.

RE: Measure my target
Mayguy
Good point that would be the exact same as center to center and the same as outside edges minus bullet diameter. and takes out the guessing of the center or any math. |
RE: Measure my target
Anyone know what size this group in blue is? ![]() |
RE: Measure my target
9/16"
|
RE: Measure my target
5/8" ??
|
RE: Measure my target
About .65 by eyeball.[center to center]Lee
|
RE: Measure my target
I would call it an "Oh My God!" size. (5/8")
|
RE: Measure my target
thats about right. expect you'd have to take the 2 shots on the left and move them over the right side. My first shot always shoot a tad higher and a little more to the left.
|
RE: Measure my target
1 1/4 would be my group measure. Center to center is how I normally measure, if I remember right....
