I got a "peeper" with the White
Well, I finally could not stand it anymore…. I needed to go to Elk River on some business and I decided – perfect time to take the White and get some shooting and the added benefit you can get a 200 yard shot. I really do not like shooting @ Elk River because the draw you shoot in is really full of drafts from all the side draws that come in… ah, what the heck I got to shoot.
The first target up @ 100 yards was the “peeper” – I always wanted to shoot a peeper with the White, but I was figuring on shooting it with a 10mm 200 grain XTP – but today I was shooting Gold Dots…. I got the peeper both times, the first shot was from a clean barrel, the follow-up shot was close enough and I did not want take the 3rd – it was dead…. Next I put out 6 clay pigeons – 3 @ 150 yards and 3 @ 175. I took pictures of the setup and moved the camera to 5 power but when you look @ the pictures – you can not even see the birds – so I did not post them. The 3 birds @ 150 were no problem – put the dual X on top of the bird pulled the trigger and they were gone – 1 shot - 1 bird. The 3 @ 175 were another matter. I held crosshairs on the top of the bird and squeezed it off – Twice – both shots were low I could see the dust fly. I walked out to the birds and both shots were about 4/5” inches low but left and right was good. The White does not have a ballistic reticule, so I moved the scope so that the post of the dual-X was at the bottom of the bird – bang! 2 shots – 2 birds. I then decided to try a 10mm 200 grain XTP on the last bird. In my mind I thought I was shooting a ballistically better bullet so I aimed Xhairs on top of the bird and squeezed – it was low!!! Just like the 250’s. Loaded up another put the post on the bird – bang! It was gone. Those two bullets shoot about ballistically the same – surprised me. The last things of the day was to shoot a group @ 150 yards and 200 yard. The 150 was really OK, but by now the drafts, and the warming sun were causing me some concerns. The last thing was the 200 yard target… That is a long ways away with a ballistically inferior bullet but I had to try. Need to do a hole lot more practice – if I want to claim to be a 200 yard shooter…. Here are the targets... ![]() |

WOW!!! that is some fantastic shooting. I think that you would give any animal you encounter a real bad day out to 200 yards. Nice shooting there Sabotloader.

RE: I got a "peeper" with the White
Those groups look like what I get out of my Lyman Mustang - at 50 yards
..............Good shootin' !!!!!!!! |

Just kiddin',,,,,,awesome shooting! |
RE: I got a "peeper" with the White
To me that looks like about a 3" group at 200 yards. I would consider that very good. I am usually happy if I get under 4" at 200 and have several loads for several guns that will do that. It looks like you just need to worry about range estimation and getting your part right, the gun seems more than cappable of doing it's part. Nice shooting.

You know I never even looked at the size to tell you the truth, the grid squares are 1 inch.... I just remember thinking to myself - when I did this with the 270 and 300 win mag - they were a lot closer... I did have one problem - It was really hard to keep the barrel cool - it is so hard for me to stand around and twiddle my thumbs waiting for time to go by... Another thing, I guess, is i have kinda lost interest in groups and have more interest in can I break pigeons @ a given range. I figureif I can break those birds I will be able to hit the animal thatI am shooting at... I took these pics hoping they would show the pigeons - but not much luck - did not have the good camera. ![]() |

RE: I got a "peeper" with the White
Great shooting non-conicaloader!At 200 yds., why did you decide to shoot the 250's rather than the 10MM/200's you used on the "birds"?

RE: I got a "peeper" with the White

At 200 yds., why did you decide to shoot the 250's rather than the 10MM/200's you used on the "birds"? Remember, I said I put 3 birds @ 175 yards, It took me 4 shots with the 250's to hit two birds (2 misses @ bird 1)- the first two shots being low but windage was very good. Then two shots to get the bird with the 200's - but when it took 2 with the 200's my mind is trying to figure out why? Because i really believed the 200's would be a better bullet in the air. I know I am shooting it faster and i know it should shoot flatter. But there is a moral to this story.... Next, I set up a target @ 200 and I decide I am going to shoot the 200 yard group with the 200grain XTP's. I also decide I now know that i should hold the post on the bull and everything should be alright. I shot3 200's at the target could not see where they hitting - I could hear them hit but I couldn't see them on 9 power, and dufus forgot the spotting scope. So I walk out to the target - the three 200's were all between 1 and6 to inches low and probably 6 to 8" apart all wide all to the right. It was terrible. This is with the post on the bull. So I went back and and loaded up the 250's and shot three of them post on the bull, walked out and checked - 2 of them were right and one left but at least they were near the point they were suppose to go. After thinking about this on the drive home, I hate it when I can't explain something that should be obvious, why did the 200's not perform as I would have expected and I have two theories - which i will check out soon. 1. When you set the target at 200 yardsthere is another rather large draw coming into the shooting draw on the left + plus the main shooting draw widens significantly. There were significant down draw drafts that morning so I am thinking the left to right draft casued all the bullets to move right and without the velocity they moved even more. 2. The White being a .504, whichI call is a slight overbore as compared to the other 50's I have - the sabot was just to loose in the bore and I was loosing pressure. In fact I had discussed with Wolfhound the other day that I was amazed that the MMP Blue sabot would fit all of my 50's from the White down to the tight GM LRH barrel. I noe believe that the blue MMP 40cal sabot will not work that well out of the White - it looks good at a 100 but it is not doing the job beyond that. It might also explain why when I shoot the 200's from the White and 300 Gold Dots from the White they hit the 100 yard target in abou the same place. I am sure I am loosing pressure. My test! I am going back to Elk River sometime this month, hopefully before football starts - they conned me into to coaching again this year - I retired from that also a year or two ago - but I am going to take the Remington 700ML up and do the same test again. It is a much tighter barrel and does have the Bushnell 3200 with a ballistic reticule. I honestly believe the 200 will perform then - but I got to prove it to myself. |
RE: I got a "peeper" with the White
I don't see what all the fuss is about. SL had an opportunity to come over this weekend to finally settle things, but he chickened out.

RE: I got a "peeper" with the White
SL - Interesting. Maybe you will take your Chrono with you. If losing pressure it should be obvious at the muzzle, no?
|
RE: I got a "peeper" with the White
It would be reflected on the chrono... I was just positive it would be OK because I have shot them to 100 b4 from the White and they grouped really....
I am really leaning to going out tomorrow morning with the Remington.... |
