GP conicals
Anyone shoot the Great plains 385 gr out of thier inlines and what are the results. I was thinking of tying some out of my Apex and my knights. Also has anyone tryed the 285gr 45cal. Thanks Kerry

RE: GP conicals
The 385's shoot ok out of a Disc Extreme. The 285's are awful. They measure .458 and are very tight to load out of a .451 barrel. [:@]

RE: GP conicals
285 and 385s shoot great out of my winchester x-150 .50 cal and my deer creek .45 rifle. Results are 5/8" @ 100 yards with the 385s in my winchester. Your Apex should love them. I use either 80 grains pyrodex rs or 80 grains triple 7. I like the pyrodex RS better in my inline due to all 3 shots grouping while with triple 7 my first shot is always a little high while the next 2 are lower and are the groupers.
In my .45 the 285s were around a 1 1/2" group. I never played with them much due to the rifle loving the 225 grain powerbelts. |
RE: GP conicals
The 410 gr. flat point shot great out of my cva last season. I haven't tried them out of my Knight yet. It's just been waaaay to hot to even think of going to the range lately.

RE: GP conicals
5/8" groups has been the worse group i can shoot out of the x-150 with my 80 grains RS and a 385 GP conical. 5/8" is what i have been getting ever since i found this load. 1/2" was the best but that only happened once. I get disapointed if i dont shoot atleast a 5/8 or 7/8" group out of the x-150. I can easily expect and see a 1" group with a 295 powerbelt a 120grains loose RS. Lots of time invested finding these loads. Now its time to go shoot the .45 and dial in my final load that i will use.:D

RE: GP conicals
And that is without a scope right?
|
RE: GP conicals
correct. With a scope you could pretty much get them into the same hole if you did your part and the wind was on your side.
Truglow ghost ring sights were a huge help too. |
RE: GP conicals
Sorry, I ain't believin.

RE: GP conicals
:D:D i expected that from your sorry.... Dont hate the player, hate the game;)

RE: GP conicals
I shoot 5/8" all the time and from all distances, with or without a scope. We are talking, per hole, right?

I know you shoot a white and so do a few others on here, and ive seen better target pics than what i normally put up. Then we have outdoorslover saying he shoots 3/4" groups @ 100 yards. Do you believe that? Do i believe that? Anything is possible when you take your time and work up the proper load. As for me, Im going out now to sight in my .45 sidelock. This shoots 2" groups @ 150 yards BTW. Ive also done work to the stock to get these groups, so , shes " Custom" built ;) |

OK.... I am all ears explain to me your 5/8"@ 100 - I really do not understand... Results are 5/8" @ 100 yards with the 385s in my winchester. 5/8" groups has been the worse group i can shoot out of the x-150 with my 80 grains RS and a 385 GP conical. 5/8" is what i have been getting ever since i found this load. I like the pyrodex RS better in my inline due to all 3 shots grouping while with triple 7 my first shot is always a little high while the next 2 are lower and are the groupers. Since you are shooting a conical from your X-150 - i assume that one shot is going to make a 4/8" hole - that leaves 1/8th for the next two 1/2" was the best but that only happened once. I get disapointed if i dont shoot atleast a 5/8 or 7/8" group out of the x-150. i did the stock work and then free floated the barrel. 5/8" groups @ 100 with 80 grains pyrodex rs and a 385 grain great plains conical. It does make people wonder.... or is my math off - I have already been wrong twice today might as well go for three |

I certainly have never shot a 1" group without a scope and haven't seen too many targets on here that are close to a 5/8" group. I don't think I have heard of anybody on here claiming those kind of groups consistently. And I don't remember Outdoorslover claiming a 3/4" group. At one time, he was calling BS on people claiming 2" groups or something like that. |
RE: GP conicals
When the weather gets in the 90's thats when it starts to suffer and will open up a little over an inch. Does amazing when the weather goes under freezing but thats to hard to shoot. frozen hands and fingers. As for glasses, i'll be needing them again soon. The targets get blurry once the light starts to go down but on the other hand, that may be a good thing for hunting.

RE: GP conicals
All the talk of 5/8" groups, I was going to answer this, maybe I will
sometime. Redclub |
RE: GP conicals
look up the reviews from actual buyers of the winchester apex. most are getting 1" groups right out of the box with a conical. a few ive seen reporting 3/4" groups with open sights. It is possible to shoot great with open sights with a winchester. You dont need a knight, white or any other brand to get excellent groups with a conical.

RE: GP conicals
I am new here, and just now going back to ML hunting for the first time in years since a back injury last year put a permenantend to my bow hunting. I tried the 385's in my CVA inline and they were all over the place, only went up to 80 grains of powder since CVA doesnt recommend bulluts over 300 grains in there rifles, I didnt want to push my luck.
|
RE: GP conicals
300 grains is for a sabot. 400 grain is the "limit" for conicals.
|
RE: GP conicals
Thanks for the heads up, I went and found the manuel, and you are right. Time to go burn more powder.
