"Witness" Marks?
What do you guys use to make witness marks on your ramrod when changing loads, etc. My ramrod (Tradions Pursuit LT) fits so closely that even a piece of masking tape will catch when putting the ramrod back on the gun. I know I can use something to scribe a line on the rod but any other suggestions?

RE: "Witness" Marks?
I used a white out marker. My rod is black and the white dot hasn't come off yet.

RE: "Witness" Marks?
I load with a range rod on the target range that never goes back in my rifle, so a Witness Mark is of little concern with tape. In your case, I am not sure what I would use. On my hunting rifle ramrods, I never mark them.

I think Cay has loaded so many he knows by feel if the bullet is seated as do many of us experienced shooters

RE: "Witness" Marks?
Believe it or not, I still put a witness mark on sabot loads... I might have shot thousands of rounds now, but I still worry about proper seating.. It has saved me a couple times also. Besides it is a good indication of how fowled the barrel is.

just use a permanent marker

RE: "Witness" Marks?
When hunting I load at the house with my range rod. I hunt my own property. Actually on a clean barrel loading is not all that hard because the projectile goes right to where it should. I find the witness mark more important on the range. As your range day wears on, that is when you will notice the importance of the witness mark. All of a sudden you start to note you are 1/4 inch or more off load but it seems set. That normally means that the barrel needs a good cleaning.
If I do get a shot out hunting, I then load with the hunting rod that came with the gun. I use no witness mark on my hunting rods. |
RE: "Witness" Marks?
Thank you for the clarification.
