Scope protection?
I have a new Remington 700 ML/Nikon scope combo. I hope this isn't a dumb question. Does anyone make a shield for the scope? My gun doesn't have an enclosed breach and the bottom of the scope is already black from sighting it in. If not, what can I use to clean the scope with?
Thanks a bunch. |
RE: Scope protection?
While I haven't had this particular problem, I would think that any of the water based black powder solvents would clean this right up. Just wet a cleaning patch and wipe it off.

RE: Scope protection?
Cheap solution is a little duct tape on the underside of the scope. Scope protectors are sold but they seem a bit much to me.

RE: Scope protection?
I cut a small rectangular piece of leather, and then used electrical tape to hold it on the bottom of the scope. Change the tape, and clean the outside of the scope every time you clean the rifle. If you don't protect your scope, the flash from your #11 caps may burn the paint off the bottom of your scope.

RE: Scope protection?
I have the same problem with my sidelock with the scope mounted cantilever. I will, and has, burnt the paint from the scope.

You could also use moleskin or self adhesive camo stuff they sell for bows.

RE: Scope protection?
Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops sell protectors for black powder scopes but a lot of people use black electrical tape.
