RE: best powder to use
That is hard to say. Most rifles will shoot well with 100 grains (in that area) and any projectile. Since it is a CVA I am sure the powerbelts would also shoot well out of it.
What kind of distance to do you expect to encounter where you hunt? I would start with some loose powder. Pyrodex or Triple Se7en 2f. Then get some powerbelts, and some 240 grain XTP's. Start with them and about 80 grains of loose powder. My CVA shoots 90 grains and about anything I shove down it real well. Loose powder is cheaper. Just get a measure and a funnel for your jug. |
RE: best powder to use
welcome bear6. I too am fairly new to muzzleloading and shoot a cva optima. I agree with cayugad with regards to the hornady xtps. I have used both the 250g and 300g with crushed ribbed sabot and my cva likes them. I have been shooting 777 pellets just to get acquainted but will use 777 loose for the first time tomorrow.
Enjoy the rifle and be safe. |
RE: best powder to use
Welcome bear6 - I strongly recommend using DRY powder. Seriously, pay attention to what Cayugad says. He usually knows what he is talking about. Like he said, I too would recommend you start with Pyrodex or Triple Seven.

RE: best powder to use
For starting out you can't go wrong with loose pyrodex. It is dirtier than 777 but works just fine.
