Foaming bore cleaner
 

Has anyone out there used some of the "foaming bore cleaner"? CVA's website has a collection of nice video's with basic mz info. Their cleaning video sure makes the foaming bore cleaner look great. Anybody have experience with it?

I used it once. It seems to clean real well but can be very messy. Hard to get the right amount without it becoming a foaming mess. DO NOT do this on the wife's kitchen table! Not sure it is what I would use all the time. Maybe if the rifle needs to be really cleaned from fouling that will not come out with standard cleaning fluids. I am a suckerfor all the "new stuff", I tend to buy more than I need and have stuff I have not even tried to use yet.

I was wondering about a bore snake with that foaming cleaner, if that would clean a lot better than regular patches. I find the bore pretty easy to clean, but the threads and breech plug are the issue. Does the foam clean the breech plug well? Chap Gleason

Seems you can't use just a little bit. It expands so much and fast.
I apply it muzzle and breech and try to block it so it expands toward
the middle.
I put some in a empty pre-wet TC#13 jar and rattle the breech-plug around, works for me.

I bought some to use shortly after I got my muzzle loader. It works good. I also think there are other brands of foaming bore cleaners out there too. Like was said in above post, it is messy. When I'm done shooting for the day I use a couple of damp patches with window washer fluid and rubbing alcohol 50/50 mix followed by a few dry patches. I then remove my breech plug and put it in a small bottle of straight rubbing alcohol, run another patch down through the barrel and then another patch with a little Rem Oil on it. At that point I'm pretty clean enough to get home where I break out the foaming bore cleaner and really give it a good cleaning, clean the breech plug, apply anti sieze to the plug and install. It might be a little overkill but it works for me.

Matter of fact, I just bought some. I will be shooting tomorrow night and will let you know how it works. I have been doing the hot water routine and that is kind of messy as well. I was told if you spray that foam down the breech end and let it soak about 10 minutes, it really does a nice job.

I assume you still have to rinse that out of there with hot water. I haven't read the directions yet.

I have saw it on shelves, but never made the purchase. I like Birchwood Casey #77 for cleaning the bores. Also Butch's Bore Shine is another good one. I never let my rifles get to the point where I really need to "power clean" them. With the others I run a few patches through and all the fowling is gone. In fact Birchwood Casey #77 actually will foam a little as you work the bore over. Great Stuff.

Also I saw the price on the can of that CVA Foam stuff and my luck with aerosol cans is normally I never get to use all the product in the can before I run out of gas... :eek::eek::eek: maybe I should try the stuff .. soundsa lot like me. :D

Also CVA has a bore blaster gel that works good to. I've used them both. The gelis a lotless mess.

409 works great for the threads in the breech. After i swab my barrel clean and everything i spray some 409 into the threads and let it sit while i go in the kitchen to scrub the plug clean. Once i come back i use my thread cleaning brush and clean out the threads and use a mop afterwards to finish it off. 409 breaks it up really well.

Ditto on the messy part. I picked up some of the CVA foaming stuff on clearence from Walmart some time ago. I put the nozzle into the muzzle and pushed the cap for maybe 3 or 4 seconds and foam was coming out of the nipple and all over the place. Some also came out of the muzzle due to the nozzle plug thingbeing vented. If memory serves it suggests you leave it in there for an hour and let it do it's thing, then wipe the bore with patches to remove whats left. I could be wrong about the time but it seems it was more than 10 or 15 minutes. It seems to clean pretty good but not any better than my regular cleaning methods that only take maybe 10 to 15 minutes total. If the gun is real dirty or you need to do some other things while the gun soaks it could work for you while your away. Or if you have several guns to clean, you could squirt foam into each and let it work, then go back to the first one and finish them in the order you did them in.

If you can get it on sale like I did for around $3, it would be worth trying without much investment.

Differnt powder residue cleans with different cleaners,hot water works well with APP powders boiling water with citrus soap works good with pyrodex with 777 the foaming cleaners or Butch's Bore Shine. What will work well is also controlled by what kind of oil or metal conditioner you use some things mix well some don't. Lee

I finally had the opportunity to use the cva bore foam. Personally the hot water technique works better for me. I let the foam set for about half an hour before I swabbed it out. Took upteen patches to get to light gray. Still used bore shine for final touch.

In my opinion its alright but it certainly doesn't shorten the process.
