anybody ever made their own stock?

I am personally displeased with the stock on my bobcat. The hollow synthetic stock just feels wimpy and isn't that visually pleasing.

My father used to be big into building custom furniture as a hobby so we have tons of wood working equipment and I mentioned trying to make one to him and he thought long and hard and said he thinks we might be able to and that he already has a good slab of walnut in the shop. Now that you know that, anything I should know? We did entertain the idea of buying a blank stock and going from there. I've been under the impression that when we get it cut to the size and general shape we want it about all that's left would be routing/carving out the various depressions in the wood for the barrel and action. Is that correct?

Oh, and I could also use this for a sculpture project for my college curriculum this fall.

I have. Turned out ok for being made out of pine, but the next will be maple. Making the barrel channel is the hardest and most time consuming part.

After you cut the profile the barrel should be inletted first, then the lock then trigger. After all the above are fitted then shaping the stock can begin. Look around for a book on rifle building too, that would be a great help.

Both of these I built.

The stocks started out looking like this.

My latest project.

Rough profile of forend, this will be a full length stock with the ram rod fully enclosed, a pistol grip will be shaped latter.

Roughed out the barrel channel with a router.

Roughed in ramrod channel with router.

Barrel channel about half done.

And that is as far as I have gone.

oh sure you cheated! You used a round barrel.

I don't know if I would call it cheating with the round tapered barrel, a straight octagon barrel is a lot easier to do in my opinion.
