I guess I went and done it again..
![]() I was looking at auction sites and noticed a sweet nearly new .50 caliber Tradition's Hawkins Woodsman flintlock with a 1-48 twist. I liked the look of the stock and the other pictures of the rifle. Since this was a no reserve auction I new it would go cheaper then most, but never guessed I could make a simple bid and end up winning the auction. So even though I claimed a while back that I was done buying more rifles, I guess I am stuck with another one. I just got verification of the win... |
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
Ya right.......:DI believe you,,,, millions of other's wouldn't but I do.;)Looks nice though. Congrats.

RE: I guess I went and done it again..
Nice find. What did you steal it for?
I bought a TC frizzen a couple months back and am going to do some welding on it to fit it to my traditions lock. |
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
$155.00 I could not pass it at that.

RE: I guess I went and done it again..
nice gun
|
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
nope, that was a really good deal on that rifle. My traditions loves 110 fffg powder and PRB. Make sure you let us know how it shoots.

RE: I guess I went and done it again..
I can't wait to test it out.. :D

Dave:
You poor man now you have to go throught all that work, working up loads, and fixing flints sure you can handle all the extra work. I would save you all that stress just send that dirty ole gun south a ways. I wouldn't want your spring cleaning to suffer |
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
your kindness and thoughtfulness touches me deeply. But I will bare the burden and not shift that to others more fortunate. :D
I've been talking to him through e-mails. He already told me the loads it likes, and said he will ship it probably Monday. So things are looking up. Now it is a waiting game. He bought the rifle to hunt with while waiting for a custom rifle to be made for him. Once the other one came he saw no use in keeping both. Glad I don't think that way...:) |
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
I sure do appreciate the suffering you go throught for others!!!
One thing i have notices is better to have 12 guns in the safe than 3 the wife doesn't notice no 13 |
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
Dave: must be a hard choice in thinking which one to grap on opening day:
I wish you well with the new flinter hopw it is a tack driver: I have some play money sitting around but have not seen a m/l I would like for a good deal ,I keep looking would like a MOWERY IN 54 CAL. but the price has to be right I thought on a 58 cal. flinter gm barrel into a renegade stock but I don't think I would have any problems with my 54 renegade |
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
:D :D :D
did I leave out anything? |
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
Dave: Nice addition. I was so bummed by the lack of activity on my T-Bolt that Doc was looking for a barrel to finish; I found a 97 laminated stock on one of the auction/sale posts and made an offer that the Michigan resident accepted. The day after that Doc emailed me that he found a 26inch barrel for my T-Bolt and was going to put it in the mix to be finished. Likely I will get two Whites within a short time of each arrival. It is going to be alot harder to explain this one to the watchdog. I bought some bullets for them a long time ago so all I will need when they arrive is time to shoot. Better two Whites than no Whites.

I read your posts and noticed you were talking about a model 97, andI was kind of tickled to think you now ownmoreWhites then I do. It really made me feel better. Then you got Redclub and Cascadedad that are stock piling the things. And UC's warehouse full of them. I guess a new little flintlock for me is a good thing. There we got that all rationalized. |

I had to go get a second one an it is not large enough since I have no room for any more. |
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
Oh please, get the defribulator Dave bought another gun I am shocked I tell ya:D
Geez good thing you aren't into military bolt action rifles like my friend. He has to pay $100's sometimes just to get a matching Bayonett for the rare German xx rifle he just bought. Feel free to show this post to your wife so she knows how "Frugal" you are. |

RE: I guess I went and done it again..
![]() My new addition arrived today. A Tradition's Hawkin Woodsman .50 caliber 1-48 twist Flintlock. It is even in better condition then the seller promised. If I did not know better he never shot it. Even the frizzen is not marked. He claimed he shot it 15-20 times so he might be telling the truth. Anyway, it is a little beauty and perhaps this weekend I can try it out after I get my new range built. (Which I should be doing, but was waiting for the rifle to arrive around the house). My old range was not stopping the lead. I had trees shot up 50 yards or more behind the trap, so I cut them down, had better steel welded and am making a new trap.... Anyway thought you might like to see it. :D |
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
Looks great, double set triggers are always a nice piece to have. Get your butt out there and fix the range so you can shoot it! I know my traditions likehalf apan full and likes the powder close to the touch hole, just something to watch for.
|
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
Thanks I will keep that in mind. I have a pan flask and so we will see what happens.
I also went to town and bought all the buidling material to make the new trap. So my friends are coming over Friday to help build it and lift all the steel into place. Should be an interesting project. |
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
Take some pics of the trap, my brother and i want to make one so we can recover any lead that gets trapped. Lead is getting expensive.
|
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
Mine does not trap lead anymore. The old one did and because of that it blew the old stand apart. And easy lead trap is shoot into a tire filled with sand. The sand will catch the bullets and makes a nice safe back stop. That is until you shoot the tire up so bad that the sand leaks out and then you have a mess. I done that route too. My concern is to stop the lead from going back into my woods and putting holes in all the trees back there. I can't believe how these conicals carry through the woods.

RE: I guess I went and done it again..
I finished building the new target trap. After knocking down all the trees that were hit by the bu;;ets that blew through the trap, it gave me some firewood and a longer range. The old one was too close anyway, so I moved it back another 35 yards which gives me 118 yards without crawling into the woods like I had to do before.
I had not shot the new rifle. The bench rest was at the 75 yard range. I figured why not. I was not all that worried about how well it grouped, but was interested in how well it functioned. So out I went and loaded 90 grains of Graf's (Wano) 2f black powder and primed it. First shot was a BIG Time hang fire. It hit about six inches low, but again that did not worry me. So I loaded it up again and laid a roundball right under the bulls eye. I then adjusted my point of aim and shot two more and they were touching just an inch above the bulls eye. I was having fun, so I just kept shooting. I finally ran out of powder in that horn, so I went in the house and got a pound of Goex 3f. I still loaded 90 grains. It started to spray them all over. Perhaps too hot I thought. So I cut the charge down to 70 grains of 3f and it was still not shooting as tight as I wanted. So I went to 80 grains and then it started to behave again. Then I started shooting at a 4"x6" piece of pine board. I was happy that I could consistently knock that over. So I took a soda pop can and laid that on the side. That was a little harder to hit. The ignition time with this rifle is impressive. It seems fast, and does not seem to eat the flints up too fast. My little three gram pan charger fills that rifle's pan but it does not fuse out on me, so I do not care about the extra side flash. Also the frizzen seems to fit nice and tight to the pan so it should be pretty water proof. I only fired about twenty five ball. Maybe tomorrow I will move the station to 25 yards and sight the rifle in. |
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
Sounds like its a great shooting rifle. Plan on doing anything with the rifle or you just going to shoot it how it is?
|
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
just another rifle to shoot when the mood hits..
|
RE: I guess I went and done it again..
Mood hits often for you doesnt it? lol.
Good luck with the rifle and hope you take some deer down in the following years. |
