Just sent in my app for the fall elk ml hunt in Colorado. Can't shoot sabots so what's the recommendation from the guys who have done this before. I have been shooting the ml fo 8+ years andhave always shot sabots.Besides from the powerbelts what else is there that is legal for Colorado. I haveplenty of time to test several bullets and loose powder outover the next few months soany help would be great. I will let every one know how it works out. I have already testedthe lighter powerbelts so we do not need to go there.Shooting a 50 cal Omega.

385 grain great plains bullets. Have you ever shot powerbelts or any other conical out of the rifle?

There are lots of different conicals you can try in the Omega. The question is which one will work. You might want to try some of the larger heavy powerbelts and see if you can work up a load with them. There are also some 460 gr No Excuse Conicals that might shoot well out of the rifle. Hornady Great Plains conicals could also be a way to go. They come in many different weights.

Like I said, it is a matter of trying different things. Good luck in your search for a good projectile and good luck elk hunting.

I really agree with what cayugad suggested to you and offer the following. Either the 460 grain No Excuse or the 460 grain Bull Shop would be an outstanding projectile. Both of these are slip fit and do not require a short starter as the Great Palins often do. The 460 NE's come sized a .503 and the Bull Shops can be sized to different sizes depending on the gun you are shooting - with the Omega you will need a .503. These bullets are extremly accurate and @ 460 grains they carry a ton of energy with them. I am shooting them from a TC sidelock - open sights @ 1500 fps. Hitting clay pigeons placed at a 100 yards is like taking candy away from a baby.... The real question is can your gun shoot them? Not all guns will shoot conicals well. The Omega happens to be one of those questionable guns because sometimes the QLA interfers with the exit of the bullet. This is not always true so try your gun before discarding the conical thought. The Omega's will shoot Power Belts well - so if that is your last resort take it but use the 348 grain PB's.

if any of you guys has a 460 bullet, take it and then take two .490 roundballs and stack them. If the 460 is any bit longer, it will be illegal. We have that stupid rule.

Is that the Colorado rule now? I thought it was2x the bore. None-the-less - .490+.490=0.980 and the460's mic .968 so they would be legal.

Even the 500 gr Bullshop conical which I like to fling down range is under an inch in length...

I really like the No Excuses 460, it shoots very well in several of my guns.

If I were you I would slug my bore to find the exact size of the bore and grooves. Then use that info to decide what diameter bullet to order from No Excuses or Bullshop. I'm sure both will help you in deciding what to get. I ordered the NE's .001 over bore size and they load as easy as a powerbelt and shoot very well. I can load 6 to 8 before needing to swab making a followup shot much faster if needed.

You also might try some 370 grain maxiballs with lower charges of powder (80-100 grains)

Unfortunately many Omegas will not shoot many conicals other than powerbelts. Mine won't. If it would shoot the 460 grain No excuses, I would shoot those. All the others mentioned are good elk medicine too.

And don't believe the hype that you have to shoot 150 grains of powder for elk! Not true. Since you will be required to shoot only open sights, and thereby limiting your shots to say 150 yards (my limit is 100 yards), then any heavy conical with a powder combo over 80 grains will do the job. My best elk loads use between 90-100 grains of 777 and 90-110 grains of pyrodex. Just remember that many buffalo fell to the 45-70 (45 caliber with 70 grains of blackpowder).

The bullshop and NE'S are great bullets however not in an Omega
I tried to shoot them in several Omega's and no luck.
The 348/405 powerbelts do well. Try using a thin fibre wad over the powder,it can really help accuracy.
