Good Deer Load?
Spent the day at the range with my new (to me)T/C Black diamond. I was shooting 250 gr and 300 gr sabots. Both shoot very well, but since I'm new to this I'd like to know what size would be best for deer. I live in Upstate NY and hunt whitetail.
Also, I had a heck of a time getting the breach plug off when I got home to clean it. In fact I broke 2 breech plug removal tools!! Any tips to keep it from sticking. Should I dab a little never sieze on the threads? Thanks |
RE: Good Deer Load?
Automotive Anti-sieze and lot's of it is what I use. Also I don't crank the BP down as hard as possible. I turn it down till tight then back it off just a hair. When I'm done shooting I loosenit off before I leave the range.
My first ML'ing deer fell to 2 T7 50 gr pellets, 300gr SST out of an Omega. The deer staggered 20 yds then dropped. |

Should I dab a little never sieze on the threads? Thanks Both of those mentioned projectiles will work just fine on deer. As to the seized breech plug, you have to put anti seize on the breech plug threads. What I do is tape the threads of the breech plug with teflon pipe tape, then I paint the tape with some anti seize. Put the plug in and when you think it is tight, back it off about 1/4 turn. Also in the black diamond I own, if I have shot ten rounds, then I take that cheap breech plug wrench that came with the rifle, reach in there, and give that breech plug a turn back and fourth. You don't have to remove it mind you. All you are doing is breaking the crud free of the breech plug. |
RE: Good Deer Load?
I always dope mine up good, use a q tip to clean up whatever makes a mess and only "finger" tighten it with the tool. It tightens up when you shoot. If its still frozen, pull the barrel off and use a propane torch and heat up the outside breechplug area. Once enough heat get to it, the plug will come out fairly easily. Just make sure the rifle is unloaded before you do the heat trick. 250 or the 300 will work great on deer. Ive used 245 powerbelts on deer and dropped them in their tracks.

RE: Good Deer Load?
Thanks, for the tips. I put on the anti-sieze but did not think to back it off a bit. I will do that for sure!
That will work for the nipples on my sidelock too, right? They seem to stick too. And your right about that cheap tool, I broke it trying to get that plug out! |

Yes, a little of the anti seize on the threads of your sidelock nipple will help that come out easier. Or do not try to remove it until you pump one patch through the barrel on a water bath. That will normally help dissolve the fowling around the nipple and it will come out easier as well. |
RE: Good Deer Load?
Tool?? Heck I use a ratchet and a deep socket on the end of a 6 inch extension.:D
LOL Cayugad, you beat me to it.:D |
RE: Good Deer Load?
I ended up using a socket with an extension but I did not have a thin wall, (It's a 7/16th). I had one small enough to fit by the plug then I reached the extention through the back of the rifle.
I think I will be getting a thin wall socket tomorrow. |

RE: Good Deer Load?
Depending on how tightly the plug fits the barrel threads, I will use the method shown or simply use the Slick50 ONE grease on tighter plugs. I tighten to snug and LEAVE it there.Sabotloader uses the tape in an overlapping manner and uses no lube. Mike's method: ![]() Sabotloader also leaves the plug snug. I've used his method successfully but I also add a touch of grease over thetape on the forward threads. Don't have the courage to go greaseless. :D Stuck plugs are no fun. Breaking the sealthen continuing to shoot has never made sense to me, but breaking the seal when finished shootingis a very goodpractice. Each gunseems to have a preference so far as breech plug lubing. Like most things muzzleloading, you'll need to find an approach that works best for you and your rifle. |
RE: Good Deer Load?
You mentioned that the bullets you were shooting weighed 250 and 300 grains....But different make bullets preform different after they strike the target...What make/brand bullets were they???

RE: Good Deer Load?
Ihave been shootingthe T/C shock wave's. I also shot a box ofHornady'swhich performed just as well as the shock wave. I have box 250 gr of traditions T-shock sabot's that a friend gave me. I'll shoot those next time I go to the range.

RE: Good Deer Load?
With the right placement of your shot, even the little 177 grain .50 caliber roundball will kill animals. Its all a matter of putting a hole through the right thing. When you start shooting the sabots like you have mentioned, you're getting a good fps and good energy. Put that all in the vital organs and you better own a freezer.

RE: Good Deer Load?
Try getting some Slick 50 One grease, most auto supplies have it. I used to use anti seize but I still had breach plugs come out hard. Since I started usung the Slick 50 I have NEVER had a tight breach plug and I shoot 120 grs of 777. I have shot as many as 40 times and the plug still came out easily. It is also cheap, the tube you get will last you 2 lifetimes.

RE: Good Deer Load?
The Hornady SST and the T/C Shockwaves are the same bullet, Hornady makes both...I also shoot them, over 90grs of Pyrodex R-S in my Knight Disc...I have killed 7-8 with this combo and my hunting buddies have killed another 5-6...Never had a problem, usually get an exit, hard enough for shoulder blade shots...

RE: Good Deer Load?
SST's are an accurate bullet. i shot 20 of them so far and got great groups. First oneis hard to load.

nymorey
Whitetail loads... I use 100/110 grains of T7-2f depending on which rifle I am shooting and I use a couple of different bullets... For elk - I use a 300 grain Nosler Partition for deer - I use a 260 grain Nosler partition but today these bullets are way to expensive for my blood so when I run out of Noslers - I will switch to Speer 300 grain Bonded Gold Dots... a poorman's Nosler... I shoot them now at a paper and rocks they have a high BC and are really accurate... Check these strings out... http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1794250 http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1791957 Underclocked explained my breech plug operation correctly. I do not use grease just tape and I run the plug up snug... never had a problem if I get the tape on correctly especially over the nose.... this diagram might explain what I am attempting.. ![]() |
RE: Good Deer Load?
The 300's will have more knockdown power, which is always welcome, and plenty of range for that gun. Try around110grains of Pyrodex and that gun will come around in no time. Try the XTP Mag bullets. They're the best you can get.
You HAVE TO use some anti seize grease on the brecch plug. I use the TC stuff and it works great. I shoot fifty times and it always comes out easily. Just tighten the BP until you feel a little resistance and then stop. You won't have any more problems with it. One great target I use now is an ordianary paper plate with a big black dot in the middle. I can get my best groups using it and it's super easy to spot with open sights. Hope I helped. Best of luck and have fun! |
