I got a new muzzleloader!
Igot a new brand muzzleloader kit from deercreek in .45 , 32" barrel and im going to be using this one for muzzleloading this year after i build it! Im not sure how i will finish the stock/barrel yet but it will be my new baby. Ahhhhh muzzleloaders are addicting! Im not sure what model but im thinking it will turn out to be a cva mountain hunter in 45 caliber. Ahh more powder and lead to burn once i build it! Just love new toys. Hopefully i'll have some pics this hunting season of it with a mulie. I'll be picking up some TC maxi hunters in 275 grain for it and see how they do in the barrel. I believe its a 1:48 twist.
Probably will bleach the barrel and find some really dark brown stain for the stock and finish it off with a boiled lin seed oil finished stock. Boy waiting for it to come in, i feel like a kid waiting those last 2 days for christmas to come lol. Jon ![]() |

frontier gander
When I first read this I thought --- Gees! I wonder what he got now and how big is it? --- ( I still keep thinking about your cannon) That kit looks sweet - good luck with it - get some pics up when you can. |
RE: I got a new muzzleloader!
lol yeah i still need to get you guys a video of that cannon going BOOOM. I'll roll it out tomorrow and start cleaning it up to get it ready. Its been over a year since i fired it so its due for its annual firing. Still need to paint it too.
I'll be sure to get pics of the new rifle when it comes in and when its being built. im also going to be buying a maple stock blank to carve out a stock for my nephews .36 traditions FG rifle. Lots of pics of that when that build starts. So many projects, so little time lol. More like so little patience :D |
RE: I got a new muzzleloader!
A kit like that sure takes a lot of the fun out of building a gun. Should be a piece of cake for you to complete. What kind of stain you going to use??

RE: I got a new muzzleloader!
Im not sure what im going to use but i want a really dark brown stain and im thinking about doing the vinegar trick and do a wannabe tiger stripe look to the stock so it looks like a quality curley maple stock. Also read about using brass black and rubbing it into the barrel for so many seconds and then buffing it out with 0000 steel wool and it leaves a charcol gray color. I'll know for sure what i will do to it once it comes in.

RE: I got a new muzzleloader!
Im looking forward to starting on it. Gotta a lot of thinking to do before it comes in. I know im set on doing the boiled linseed oil finish. I still havnt considered what i will do with the barrel yet. May also look into replacing all the brass with metal. Anyone know where i could find a metal or puter buttcap/ nose piece and all the other trimmings i'll need? For some reason when i touch brass or get the smell of it, i get sick to my stomach.

RE: I got a new muzzleloader!
It will be here friday afternoon! First this im going to do is put it all together and make sure everything is there and test fit all the parts. After that i'll be sanding with 600 grit sand paper and top it off with 2000 grit and finally 0000 steel wool before i stain it. Ive been practicing with the boiled linseed oil on my derringer for a few days and its coming out great. Now that we finally have warm weather, i put it outside in the sun between coats for a few hours, hand rub it again and add another coat. Its coming out smooth. Im going to enjoy doing this rifle. Will post pics when it comes in and when i start finishing it.
