Barnes XPB
Just did a search for Barnes XPB on this forum and it returned nothing. Hard to believe that. Anyway, Randy Wakeman on
http://www.chuckhawks.com/muzzleloading_2006_awards.htm gave his blowback award for Bullet of the Year to the Barnes XPB. Anybody use this? Penetration? Cost? Accuracy? Load with what gun/barrel length? Chap Gleason PS. This is what Randy said: BULLET OF THE YEAR Well, its not even marketed as a muzzleloading bullet-but 100% weight retention, easy loading, good flight characteristics, and a large bearing surface due to its flat base makes the Barnes XPB 275 grain .451 bullet as close to a perfect muzzleloading bullet as I've ever used when coupled with an MMP HPH-12 sabot. Less recoil than 300 grain offerings, better obtainable velocities in a bullet that expands to 140% or more of its original diameter at 1400 fps, and a bullet that has been shown to not just out-penetrate 300 grain bullets, but most 340 to 375 grain class projectiles as well. From muskrat to moose, from groundhog to grizzly, the Barnes #45105 275 grain XPB is the best all-around high-performance muzzleloading projectile you can put into a big game animal; it has no known velocity limitation, either. At 10 yards or at 200 yards, you are good to go with the right powder charge. |

I shoot them. They are stock # 45123 454 casull 451 Diameter 250 grain XPB cannelured. I shoot them out of my Knight Wolverine with 85 grains of Goex 3f and out of my Knight Disc with 120 grains of Pyrodex RS.
They are excellent long range bullets. They retain their weight. I have not had the experience to actually shoot a animal with them but have no doubt about their penetration ability with the pure copper design of the bullet. I started shooting these because they are more cost effective then shooting the Barnes MZ for muzzleloaders. They are basically the same bullet but cheaper. |

This is where I get them. From Midway. http://tinyurl.com/2uenpa They shoot well out of my A&H. I did kill a deer this year with this bullet. It was a neck shot though. I did not recover the bullet. I don't know how they perform with a perfect behind the shoulder shot. They are kind of high dollar if you ask me. I used the MMP HPH 12. If I am still in Iowa next year, I will probably try them out of the HPH 24. |
