barrel option update
 

We talked about the lack of after market barrels for CVA rifles and the sense or lack thereof of putting an expensive barrel on an inexpensive gun. I spoke with Long Hammock today, and they will make me a barrel to fit my gun, drop in (unblued), for $200, in the twist of my choice. I saw my gun sell less than a week ago, in 54 cal., for $300, before shipping. I would likely order a 1:32 to go with the current 1:66 (?). I would only consider buying a used ML with a wood stock in 1:32 or faster twist. Having a barrel made would give me a PRB barrel and a conical/sabot barrel. Is this crazy? I don't see many used guns fitting what I'm after but maybe I just haven't looked long and hard enough. Thoughts?

Long Hammock is supposed to be an excellent barrel. They make nice roundball rifles from all reports. That sounds like you have a good thing with that.

You still would have to blue it and a factory blueing will be nicer. I think you can find a nice inline or side hammer for around that price.
What exactly are you looking for? I will keep my eyes open for you.

SHills - I would do the bluing or in my case browning to match up what I have now.

If I could find a 50 cal. in 1:36 or faster twist, with wood stock for $250, in good condition, particularly the barrel, I'd likely buy it. If an in-line, I'd prefer a break-action; if traditional, a percussion. I'm not afraid of a project and have considered making a stock from scratch, if I found a great barrel. A 1:36 Douglas barrel that lost it's stock would be a real temptation.

I have a similar setup to what your describing. I bought a used Lyman GPR in 54 with the 1 in 60 twist. I got it off of gunbroker.com or auctionarms.com, can't remember which right now, for $175 + shipping. I got my 57GPR peep off of Ebay for around $30 and then bought a GPH barrel in 50 with the 1 in 32 twist from Midsouth for $127 plus ordered a 17 front sight for $23 and a 37 bead sight for the 54 barrel for $7 at the same time. The GPH barrel shoots 460 No Excuses very well and looks like it will be a good long range traditional shooter with the sight set up I have on it.

I'm not sure what model CVA you have but you might contact Deer Creek and ask them to check into their stock and see if they can find a faster twist barrel for you. I know that there were mountain stalkers that had a 1 in 38 twist, not sure if they had anything faster. When I bought my son's 54 bobcat it came with a 1 in 38 twist barrel that was very rusty inside, they sent a replacement that was 1 in 48 and pristine.

Dmurphy - that's the beauty of owning a gun with support in the after market. You've got a great set up there. My CVA is a Mountain Rifle. Deer Creek has 1:48 for this gun I can get for $95. I'm afraid the 1:48 is a bit of a no man's land twist rate; better than what I have for a variety of bullets but not as wise an investment as the 1:32 for another $100. Thanks for the suggestion....keep 'em coming.
