And I love it. This thing just feels like a shotgun should. I need some info on a few things though. It says in the book that the recommended turkey load for it is 1 1/2oz lead shot. Does anyone see any harm if I shoot 2oz or 2 1/2oz? The shot cups I have are for 2oz and 2 1/2ozand I want to use them. I want to get an extended choke tube for Turkey because I have to remove it to reload- any recommendations? I am looking at a Carlson's Extended Turkey .670 dia. Does Hastings have some sort of Quick Change choke system? And last but not least- I realized I do not have the proper equipment to clean the 12ga barrel- does anyone make a jag for a 12ga? Brush only? BOre snake? What all doI need?

Glad to hear u got your replacement MLSG. You can get 12 gauge cleaning supplies almost everywhere. Even Wally World carries 12 ga cleaning supplies.

Loading instructions are put there for a reason. I would follow the directions. If the wads are too long, cut them back. You need to understand that 1 ounce of lead is 437.5 grains. 656.25 gains would be equal to 1-1/2 ounces of bird shot. Have you ever shot a conical 656.25 grains in size with any kind of powder load? The recoil is brutal as is the impact to the rifle. If your loading 80 grains of powder and that large amount of lead you are really pushing a LARGE projectile down the bore. Granted the 12 gauge size of the barrel is going to help but still, 2 ounces of lead would be 875 grains if you compare to a conical bullet. I believe that is why they limit the amount of shot, and I would stick to their recommendations..

In my .62 smoothbore (20 gauge) I only shoot 100 grains of shot or equla to about a 435 grain conical and 80 grains of powder.

Glad you like your rifle, follow the recommendations of the manufacturer for now until you are more at ease with the shotgun or perhaps some other shooters want to tell you their secret loads..

Maybe that is why everyone says the recoil on the TK2000 is so brutal. Their recommended load was 2 1/2oz of shot. Maybe that is how they get such good patterning out to 40 yards- large amount of shot and the xfull choke? The only thing I don't like about this Traditions gun is the choke, I have to remove it to load if it is tighter than Modified so I need some recommendations on an extended choke or quick change choke in full or xfull so I can easily remove it and re-install it for loading.

:D:D:D I just thought about what you said.. could you picture someone shooting 100 grains of powder and almost a 1000 grain conical? No wonder the recoil would be brutal. It might have very little to do with rifle design now that I think about it. Your question was a real eye opener...

So do you think I would be better off just loading with an under and over shot wad instead of the shot cups?Loading without shot cups should help with better patterning shouldn't it? Any recommendations on a good volume measurement tool for the shots? Is weighing them the best way?

In my smoothbore, I put a plastic wad down on top of the powder, dump 100 grains of #5 shot from a brass powder measure set at 100 and then an over the shot card. That thing will smoke a coffee can at 25 yards..

Before when I loaded it with an over the powder card, then a fiber wad, then shot without a cup, then an over the shot card, it did not hold as tight a pattern. Coming out of a Renegade, there is still a lot of recoil with only 80 grains of powder..

I have the TC see through powder measure that goes to 125 grains...what would be your best guess at volume with that and #4 shot? How close to 1 1/2 oz would that get me? If it will get me close I will put that in one of the shot cups I have now and get a measurement then cut some up for loading. I don't have any other way to measure the load right now and I might want to blow some smoke out of this pig Sunday.

MO Archer, I shoot 1-1/2 oz of #5 out of my CVA Optima 12 ga barrel. It measures at about 96 grains. I've weighed it. May be a little different at #4, though.

Cayugad, you are shooting more than 1-1/2 oz of shot if you are using 100 grn measured. Do you have a scale you can weigh it with?

50 grain setting = 3/4 ounce of shot
60 grain setting = 7/8 ounce of shot
70 grain setting = 1 once of shot
80 grain setting = 1 1/8 ounce of shot
90 grain setting = 1 1/4 ounce of shot
100 grain setting = 1 3/8 ounce of shot
110 grain setting = 1 1/2 ounce of shot

Cayugad, where did you get that chart? I have actually counted the pellets and weighed them (with a food scale) and your chart seems to be skewed low (giving less weight that is actually there.)

The chart was posted on a different website where black powder shotguns were being discussed. Being a new black powder shotgun shooter, I copied the chart as a reference for my own loading. I can not validate the information, only pass it on. So far it has worked well for me though. Perhaps your experiences can shed even new information and light to all of us black powder shotgun shooters.

Here's a link that tells # of pellets of lead shot for a specific oz load. I actually counted the pellets and then checked it with a scale.

Shot this cannon today. I used 1.5 oz of #4 lead shot in a cut shot cup, 100 grains of loose Pyrodex, and a Carlson's .670 extended turkey choke. It kicks like a Mule with this load. At 25 and 45 yards the 8x11 sheet of paper my printed target was on had alot of holes in it. It was really windy so I only shot it 3 times and didn't count holes.I am going to wait for a calmer day and take it back out and experiment with different loads.I was helping my Dad sight in his new Nikon Prostaff scope on his Optima so I was more occupied with this. I will post my detailed results when I get more range time with it.

I shoot 2-1/2 oz of lead in my TK2000 and it'll knock the snot out of you if your not properly anchored. It sounds like that gun is doing fine. I have several 50 cal Traditions and they all shoot great. I may even buy this one for dad. I hooked him into blackpowder this deer season and he can't wait to go again, (with his new gun of course for father's day). IfI get this he can go turkey hunting with me this year. Been a while since I have been here. I got to do more shooting with this gun and it doesn't patern well at all. I have tried various powder and shot loads using #4, #5, and #6 lead shot with not that good of results. I have a Carlson's .670 extended choke and the one that came in the gun, neither pattern for crap. Does anyone that has one of these have a load/choke that they have found to work?

I shoot that 2 1/2 oz out of my TK2000 with 110 grains and as long as the gun is shouldered tightly and all seems fine. It feels more like a strong push, now granted I have on all my clothes and jacket when turkey hunting.I don't think i would shoot it in just a t-shirt. Took a nice bird at 60 yards with that outfit.:D
